Hollande, Merkel to mark 150 years of German centre-left

Germany's opposition Social Democrats mark their 150th birthday Thursday, with French President Francois Hollande as the only foreign speaker and conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel in the audience. The French Socialist president will give the keynote address at the anniversary celebrations of his centre-left allies, who are battling poor poll ratings as they try to unseat Merkel in September 22 elections.

Merkel meets pope for private audience

German Chancellor Angela Merkel met Pope Francis for private talks at the Vatican Saturday which addressed the state of Europe and its role in the world, the Vatican said in a statement. Merkel flew in especially to meet the new pontiff, an encounter that lasted 45 minutes -- unusually long for a private papal audience. "These discussions covered the long relationship between the Vatican and Germany as well as common concerns including the social, political, economic and religious situation in Europe and the world," the Vatican said.

Merkel: some action needed on reforming CO2 trading

HAMBURG (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday economic growth assumptions behind the European Union's carbon permit trading system no longer applied and action should be taken about backloading supply in the market after September's election. The news of Merkel's first cautious backing for reform seeking to boost prices in the EU's flagship emissions trading system (ETS) sent carbon prices sharply higher, as traders interpreted it as likely support for the passing of the plan.

Inaction on global warming 'not an option'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Monday that in the quest for binding international emissions targets to fight global warming, doing nothing is "not an option". "I'm under no illusion that there is a long road ahead," Merkel said about efforts to reverse global warming, melting ice caps and rising seas. But she warned at a climate conference in Berlin that "doing nothing only means that it will get a whole lot more expensive."

Merkel urges more transparency in clothing production

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday urged greater transparency about where and how clothing is produced after the collapse of a garment factory complex in Bangladesh killed more than 500 people. Merkel said she wanted to see a broadening out of the 'Fair trade' label that already exists for some industries to the fashion sector, speaking at a German Protestant Church conference.

Merkel's enemies call for halt to German bashing

Two of Chancellor Angela Merkel's most prominent opponents have urged France's ruling Socialists to call a halt to the "German bashing" that has soured the two countries' partnership. Ties between the nations, whose post-war reconciliation has driven European integration, sunk to a new low this weekend after France's Socialists accused Merkel of "selfish intransigence" in her response to the eurozone debt crisis, in a leaked party document.

Merkel lambasted by France despite her softer tone

An attack by French Socialists on Angela Merkel's drive for belt-tightening coincides with concessions by the German chancellor on austerity, but five months from elections she is loathe to trumpet her flexibility. Senior French politicians sought to calm the waters while the German government played down the remarks, from a leaked document which called Merkel's insistence on eurozone austerity "selfish".

Merkel was not seeking to 'advise' ECB

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was not seeking to sway the European Central Bank on interest rate decisions when she -- in a rare move -- waded into a debate on the issue, her spokesman said Friday. "There's absolutely no reason to suppose that the chancellor, in any way, wanted to address advice or suggestions to the ECB in her speech," Steffen Seibert told a regular government news briefing. Merkel fully respects the ECB's independence and will continue to do so in the future, he said, a day after her comments to a savings bank conference in the eastern city of Dresden.

German Greens would back Merkel alliance after election - poll

BERLIN (Reuters) - A majority of Germany's Greens voters would be ready to form an alliance with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives if the chance arises after September's election, a poll showed on Wednesday, raising slightly the possibility of a new coalition. In a Forsa poll shortly before a Greens pre-election conference due this weekend, 54 percent of the party's supporters said it should be ready for a conservative-Greens coalition, so far untested at the national level.

Merkel says Germany not seeking 'hegemony' in EU

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday rejected the idea that her country was seeking "hegemony" in the European Union, but insisted members needed to cede some national sovereignty for the greater good. Merkel said Germany always sought to make joint decisions in coordination with France and the other members of the 27-nation bloc. "Germany has a ... sometimes complicated role because we are the largest economy -- we are not the richest, but we are the largest," Merkel said at a book launch and panel talk with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
