Tennis: Radwanska out of Brussels to aid French Open bid

World number four Agnieszka Radwanska has pulled out of next week's Brussels WTA tournament in a bid to protect her injured shoulder ahead of the French Open. The Polish star has been carrying the injury throughout the claycourt season where she lost in the second round in Madrid as well as Rome. "I have had some shoulder problems for a while & on clay it's getting a bit worse," Radwanska tweeted. "I'm afraid it might get even worse, with RG (Roland Garros) and grass coming up. So I felt I had to pull out. It's upsetting, I wanted to defend my title."

Tennis: Serena battles past Kazakh qualifier

World No.1 Serena Williams was given a reasonable test in her first match at the Madrid Masters on Sunday against Kazakh qualifier Yulia Putintseva before the American eventually prevailed 7-6 (7/5), 6-1. Putintseva had come through two rounds of qualifying and she seemed to handle the warm conditions better early on in an extremely tight first set. Both women broke each other once and Putintseva managed to save another three break points to force the set into a tie-break.

Murray to face Ferrer in Miami final

By Simon Evans MIAMI (Reuters) - Britain's Andy Murray fought back for a 6-7 6-1 6-2 win over France's Richard Gasquet to reach the final of the Sony Open where he will face Spaniard David Ferrer on Sunday. Murray recovered after making a mess of the first set where he was serving for it at 5-4 but double-faulted on break point and ended up losing out in the tie-break. Gasquet had been playing some inspired tennis but he was outplayed in the second set and the Scotsman never looked in danger in the third.

"I've been so close to winning," she said. "I would love to win this. I've been coming to this tournament since I was a little kid. It would mean a lot to win it."

Russian third seed Maria Sharapova advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA and ATP Miami Masters hardcourt tournament with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Italian eighth seed Sara Errani on Wednesday. Sharapova fired six aces but made 14 double faults before saving a break point in the 10th game of the second set. She then broke Errani in the penultimate game and held serve to end it on a forehand winner after just under 2 1/2 hours.
