MADRID (Reuters) - World number one and defending champion Serena Williams continued her serene progress at the Madrid Open when she eased past Spanish wildcard Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2 7-5 in the second round on Tuesday.

Chasing a fourth title of the year and the 50th of her career, Williams had too much power for the slightly-built Dominguez Lino, who nonetheless managed to unsettle her illustrious opponent with some clever drop shots and lobs.

Russia's Ekaterina Makarova pulled Russia level at 2-2 with Slovakia in their Fed Cup semi-final battle on Sunday, beating Daniela Hantuchova in a tough three-setter here.

Makarova won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in two hours 29 minutes to record her first ever win over Hantuchova in three attempts.

"Today I was in control in all three sets but failed to avoid mistakes and lost the second set," Makarova said. "But I was hoping to clinch my first win over Hantuchova and luckily, I managed to do it. And I still have enough power to play doubles."

Maria Kirilenko kept Russia's hopes alive in their FedCup semi-final with Slovakia on Sunday as she beat Dominika Cibulkova 7-5, 6-1.

Kirilenko, who is ranked 13th in the world, made light work of an opponent she has now beaten in three of their four meetings as she triumphed in one hour 41 minutes.

"After yesterday's failure I managed to find my tennis today and it was the key to success in the match," Kirilenko said.

"I played clinically trying to follow the plan which we worked out together with my coaches and it paid off as I won today."

Sharapova, seeking a first title since her 2012 French Open triumph gave her a career Grand Slam, will face former world number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark -- a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 winner over Germany's Angelique Kerber.

INDIAN WELLS, California (Reuters) - Former champion Caroline Wozniacki battled through a marathon encounter to upset fourth-seeded German Angelique Kerber 2-6 6-4 7-5 on Friday and reach her third BNP Paribas Open final in four years.

The eighth-seeded Dane, winner at Indian Wells in 2011 after being a losing finalist the previous year, held off a late fightback by Kerber to scrape through in a wildly fluctuating contest lasting two-and-a-half hours.

Second-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova reached the semi-finals of the Indian Wells ATP Masters and WTA tournament on Wednesday with a 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 victory over Sara Errani.

In a rematch of last year's French Open final, Sharapova again emerged triumphant, setting up a meeting with Russian Maria Kirilenko for a place in Sunday's final.

Kirilenko advanced with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over fifth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova.

Maria Kirilenko added another upset to her Indian Wells resume on Wednesday as she toppled fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova in three sets to reach the semi-finals of the combined ATP Masters and WTA event.

Russia's Kirilenko, playing her first tournament since retiring with a right shoulder injury in the first round at Doha, defeated the 2011 Wimbledon champion Kvitova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

She improved to 6-0 in three-set matches this year and reached the Indian Wells semi-finals for the first time in 10 appearances.

INDIAN WELLS, California (Reuters) - Erratic serving cost Petra Kvitova dearly as the fifth-seeded Czech was knocked out of the BNP Paribas Open by Russian Maria Kirilenko on Wednesday, losing 4-6 6-4 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

Kirilenko will next meet 2006 champion and compatriot Maria Sharapova, who beat sixth-seeded Italian Sara Errani 7-6 6-2 in a late evening match at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Ekaterina Makarova kept alive Russian hopes of reaching the Fed Cup semi-finals on Sunday by defeating veteran Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-1, 6-1 in the second of day's reverse singles.

That left the tie finely balanced at 2-2 with just the concluding doubles to follow.

In what was her first ever meeting with the 42-year-old Date-Krumm, Makarova needed just 59 minutes to complete a commanding win.

"I felt some extra responsibility today as the result of this rubber could be crucial," Makarova said.

Ayumi Morita gave Japan a 2-1 lead against Russia in their Fed Cup World Group first round tie with a comprehensive straight sets win over Elena Vesnina here on Sunday.

Morita won 6-4, 6-1 in one hour 32 minutes to record her second win over Vesnina in their third head-to-head meeting.

"I wanted to win very much today and now I'm lucky because I managed to do it," said Morita.

"I played well in both my encounters here and I'm really pleased with my performance this weekend."
