US senator blocks Afghan aid, seeks info on cash payments

A US lawmaker said Monday he is blocking $75 million in aid to war-torn Afghanistan until President Barack Obama's administration provides information on alleged "secret cash payments" to President Hamid Karzai. Senator Bob Corker, the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has written a fourth letter to the Obama administration complaining about the policy, saying his previous requests for briefings, in a classified setting if needed, have been ignored.

Taliban to open Doha office Tuesday: Jazeera TV

A Taliban office, touted as a tool to help facilitate talks between the militants and the Afghan government, will open on Tuesday in Doha, the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television reported. Al-Jazeera cited anonymous sources for its Monday report and gave no further details but a Taliban spokesman in Kabul told AFP he was "unaware" of any such development. In April Afghan President Hamid Karzai said the opening of a Taliban office in Doha could "facilitate the peace process".

17 Killed in attack near Afghan Supreme Court

Kabul, Jun 11 (EFE).- Seventeen civilians were killed and 39 others wounded Tuesday in a car-bomb attack targeting a bus carrying employees of the Afghan Supreme Court, Kabul's deputy police chief told Efe. The vehicle rigged with explosives was detonated at around 4:30 p.m. in Masoud Square, near the U.S. Embassy, Dawood Amin said, adding that the fatalities include women and children. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the strike.

Suspected Taliban bomber targets Afghan court, kills 17

It was the second large-scale attack in Kabul claimed by the hardline Islamist group in two days. On Monday, seven insurgents, including suicide bombers, laid siege to Kabul's main airport for four hours before they were killed.

7 Afghan insurgents die in attack on Kabul airport

Kabul, Jun 10 (EFE).- Seven Taliban fighters died Monday in an attack on the Kabul airport, the Afghan capital's police chief told Efe. Two members of the Taliban unit exploded suicide bombs and another five were gunned down by security forces, while the civilian population suffered no casualties, Mohammad Ayub Salangi said. He said the insurgents were armed with explosives, grenades and automatic rifles and took cover in two half-completed buildings near the airport, from where they traded shots with security forces for several hours.
