French photographer kidnapped in Afghanistan escapes, Kabul says

By Hamid Shalizi KABUL (Reuters) - A French photographer escaped captivity in Afghanistan on Monday more than three months after being taken hostage, the Interior Ministry said. Four armed men snatched freelancer Pierre Borghi from a busy area of the capital, Kabul, in November, ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. Sediqqi said Borghi had run away from his captors in Wardak province, near Kabul, and then been picked up by Afghan security forces and taken to the capital.

The children were killed during a joint Afghan-NATO operation in the Shigal district of restive Kunar province bordering Pakistan late on Saturday. An Afghan official involved in the operation who did not want to be named said air support was called in after local and coalition forces came under attack, resulting in the death of an American and injuries to several Afghan soldiers.

A Taliban car bomb struck a NATO military convoy on Saturday, killing three foreign soldiers and two coalition civilian workers in the deadliest attack on Western forces this year. The blast occurred in the Zabul province, where American and Romanian troops are based, according to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which did not disclose the nationalities of the soldiers in line with policy.
