Israel insistence on Jewish state declaration a 'mistake'

US Secretary of State John Kerry has criticised Israel's insistence that the Palestinians publicly declare Israel to be a Jewish state. Kerry said Thursday that recognition had already been made in UN resolutions and by the late Palestinian president Yasser Arafat and it is a mistake for Israel to keep insisting on it as the two sides work towards a two-state peace agreement. "'Jewish state' was resolved in 1947 in (UN) Resolution 181 where there are more than 40-- 30 mentions of 'Jewish state,'" Kerry testified at a Congressional hearing.

Israel MPs pass law to conscript ultra-Orthodox Jews

Israeli MPs on Wednesday voted through a law which will compel ultra-Orthodox Jews to either serve in the military or perform civilian service. The bill was voted through by 65 to 1 in a poll broadcast on Israel's parliamentary television channel. The lone dissenting vote was cast by an MP from the far-right Jewish Home who broke coalition discipline to oppose the law. Opposition parties within the 120-seat parliament had earlier announced they would not participate in the vote.

Britain opposes boycotts of Israel

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday voiced opposition to boycotts of Israel, as he spoke in the Israeli parliament during a two-day visit to the Holy Land. "Britain opposes boycotts," he said, referring to trade unions campaigning for the exclusion of Israelis, and universities trying to stifle academic exchange. "Delegitimising the State of Israel is wrong. It's abhorrent. And together we will defeat it." hmw-jad/bpz

British PM in Israel to talk peace, Iran

British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived in Israel on Wednesday for a two-day visit during which he will meet Israeli and Palestinian leaders to discuss the peace talks and Iran. It is Cameron's first official visit since the Conservative leader took over as premier in 2010. After landing at Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv, Cameron went straight to Jerusalem to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for talks focusing on "Iran's military nuclear programme, the peace process and bilateral ties," an aide to the Israeli leader said.

Israel PM: no deal unless Palestinians accept Jewish state

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday ruled out any deal with the Palestinians unless they recognise Israel as the Jewish state and give up their refugees' right of return. And he said Israel and the Palestinians were getting further away from reaching a peace deal which would end the decades-long conflict, with US-led peace talks bogged down in a bitter dispute over the question of Israel as a Jewish state.
