CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian police on Sunday detained a young man who opened fire on Prime Minister Hisham Kandil's convoy and his four companions in Cairo in an incident the authorities said had no political motive. Kandil was not injured. The young men were on their way to settle a feud when their vehicle crossed paths with Kandil's convoy at 11 p.m. (5 p.m. EST)in Dokki, a residential and commercial district of the capital, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Sudan police use teargas to end land protest

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese police used teargas and batons to break up a protest by around 400 people in Khartoum on Friday demanding the government grant them land to build homes, witnesses said. Protesters blocked several roads in the east of the capital and hurled stones at police, witnesses said. They shouted slogans complaining the government had not honored a promise to allocate land for houses. The police were not immediately available for comment.

First oil from South Sudan's Upper Nile to reach Sudan May 10

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - South Sudan will ship its first oil from its largest fields in Upper Nile state to export facilities in Sudan on May 10, Sudan's oil ministry told state news agency SUNA on Saturday. In March, the African neighbors agreed to resume cross-border oil flows. Landlocked South Sudan had shut down its production of up to 350,000 barrels per day (bpd) in January 2012 after failing to agree with Sudan over oil fees. The new nation, which seceded from Sudan in 2011, needs to export its oil through Sudan.

Communal clashes in Nigeria kill at least 39 - police

ABUJA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Clashes between rival ethnic groups have killed at least 39 people in eastern Nigeria's Taraba state since they erupted on Friday, police said. Members of the Jukun were marching through the small commercial town of Wukari to a funeral when an argument broke out with local Hausa and Fulani youths, which quickly degenerated into pitched battles with guns and machetes. Attackers set fire to around 40 houses, police said.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Six men were jailed by a Cairo court on Thursday in the first ruling against a little-known group opposed to Islamist President Mohamed Mursi that the government has accused of participating in "terrorist acts". State security prosecution last month ordered the detention of the men it said were Black Bloc members on accusations that the group seeks the destruction of the country, Egyptian state news agency MENA reported at the time.

Kenya jails two Iranians for life for plotting attacks

Ahmad Mohammed and Sayed Mousavi were found guilty last week of planning the attacks and also possessing 15 kg (33 pounds) of explosives. They were arrested in Nairobi in June.

One dead in gunfight between Egypt PM guards, 'thugs'

A passerby who was wounded in a firefight between Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Qandil's bodyguards and a group of "thugs" died of his injuries on Monday, a security official said. The man, a street vendor, was shot in the neck on Sunday night when a group of people driving a pick up traded fire with Qandil's bodyguards who were travelling in a convoy with him. Qandil was not hurt. His bodyguards opened fire at the truck carrying five people that had cut into Qandil's convoy as it crossed Cairo's October 6 bridge across the Nile.
