Cairo airport to partly close as economic crisis bites

Cairo's international airport will be partly closed at night due to fewer incoming flights and to save energy, reports said on Monday, highlighting the economic crisis sweeping Egypt. Two runways will be closed for four hours starting from 1.30 am (2330 GMT) "in order to save energy", said civil aviation minister Wael al-Maadawi in statements carried by the press. Only one runway, at Terminal 3 -- which serves as a regional hub -- will remain open 24 hours a day. Maadawi said airport revenues were not enough to cover the costs of keeping the runways open.

The officers, responsible for passport control and security at El-Borj airport on the Mediterranean coast, called off their protest after a meeting a senior aviation official to discuss some of their demands, state news agency MENA said.

In late January the court sentenced 21 defendants -- out of the total 73 people accused in the case -- to death, sparking riots in Port Said, home to most of the defendants and where the 2011 stadium violence took place. The court, sitting in Cairo for security reasons, was also due to confirm the death sentences for the first 21 defendants it issued on January 26.

Egypt and the IMF agreed the loan deal in principle in November but Cairo requested a delay the following month due to violent street protests.
