Vodafone slashes Czech prices to match Telefonica offer

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Vodafone slashed its calling rates in the Czech Republic on Friday, just a day after rival Telefonica Czech Republic cut its prices, in a market long criticised for lack of competition. Vodafone said it was launching unlimited calls and text messages along with 600 megabytes of data for 691 crowns (22.81 pounds) per month. Telefonica offered unlimited call and text messages along with 1 gigabyte of data for 745 crowns on Thursday.

Telecom Italia top shareholder sceptical over Hutchison deal - sources

MILAN (Reuters) - Telecom Italia's main shareholder, holding company Telco, has given a cool reception to a proposal for a possible tie up with the Italian mobile phone unit of Hutchison Whampoa, three sources close to Telco told Reuters. The sources were speaking after Telecom Italia's board discussed the proposal on Thursday and mandated its chairman and four board members to explore it further.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A consortium of India's Bharti Airtel Ltd has qualified to enter the final stage of a telecommunications licensing process in Myanmar, a company source said on Thursday, pitting it against some of the world's leading carriers to secure a permit in one of the last major untapped markets. India's top court allows Bharti, Vodafone, Idea 3G pacts until April 11

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Telecom firms Bharti Airtel Ltd, Vodafone Group Plc's local unit and Idea Cellular can maintain until April 11 pacts allowing them to offer 3G services outside their licensed zones, India's supreme court ruled on Monday. The telecommunications ministry had asked Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular to end the pacts, which the government says are illegal. It also imposed penalties on the companies.

22 bidders join Myanmar mobile telephone battle

Vodafone, China Mobile and an investment fund linked to billionaire George Soros are among 22 bidders vying to enter Myanmar, one of the world's last unexplored mobile telephone frontiers. "It does not, however, currently have any intention to merge with or make an offer for Vodafone, whether alone or in conjunction with others," Verizon said in a statement filed Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
