Portland and Birmingham awarded world indoor champs

MONACO (Reuters) - The United States has been awarded the 2016 world indoor championships, while Britain will host the 2018 event, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said on Friday. Portland, Oregon, will stage the athletics championships in March 2016, just a few months before the Rio Olympics, marking the first time the U.S. has hosted the event since 1987.

Olympics: Rio Games handball arena to become schools

Rio Olympic Games organisers said Thursday the 2016 handball arena will be transported across the city to become four schools. The move is in keeping with the need to ensure no 'white elephant' facilities stand idle after the multi-sport showpiece event. It is all part of the idea that there must be a maximum "legacy" conferred to the host city after South America's first ever Olympics, sparking the creation of "nomadic architecture" in what will be a Games first.

Olympics: Gripes over Tokyo stadium overshadow Games euphoria

Just weeks after they rode the wave of euphoria to Olympic victory when Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 Games, organisers are being brought back to Earth with a bump. The eye-catching architectural centrepiece -- a futuristic, bike-helmet-shaped stadium -- is too big say detractors. What's more, others add, it's too expensive.

Japan may scale down new 2020 Olympic stadium

TOKYO - (Reuters) - Japan may scale down its plans for a new Tokyo stadium for the 2020 Olympic Games in an effort to curtail rising costs and fend off criticism the originally planned building is too large. Olympics minister Hakubun Shimomura told a parliamentary committee on Wednesday that the new stadium could cost as much as 300 billion yen ($3.08 billion), as opposed to the 130 billion yen in Tokyo's bid proposal, and that the government would consider scaling back.

Tokyo man to lose home to make way for stadium: again

By Ruairidh Villar and Hyun Oh TOKYO (Reuters) - Kohei Jinno fans out the black and white photos of his family posing proudly in front of their central Tokyo home, a house they were forced to leave ahead of the 1964 Olympic Games to make way for construction of the main stadium. Now Jinno, 79, has to move again.

Olympics: No joy for two-time Tokyo Games evictee

Tokyo's successful bid to host the Olympics made much of plans to re-use venues built for Japan's last Summer Games. But for Kohei Jinno, redevelopment for 2020 means eviction again -- just like for 1964. While much of Japan celebrated Tokyo's victory at last week's meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Buenos Aires 79-year-old, Jinno was cursing his luck.

Olympics: Italy could bid for 2024 Olympics

Italy could bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games, Prime Minister Enrico Letta has said, after Tokyo clinched victory in the competition for the 2020 Games. After the Olympics in Brazil in 2016 and Japan in 2020, the 2024 edition is likely to go to Europe, North America or Africa according to an unwritten rule for the IOC which tends to alternate continents. London held the last "European" Olympics in 2012. Rome had to drop its 2020 bid because of economic troubles after then prime minister Mario Monti made it clear budget cuts and austerity would not allow it.
