Israeli president and Nobel peace laureate Shimon Peres invited Pope Francis on an official state visit to Israel after a meeting in the Vatican on Tuesday. "I am expecting you in Jerusalem. Not just me but all the people of Israel," Peres said in English to the pope at the end of their 30-minute meeting. The president gave Francis a bible in Hebrew and English, with a dedication inside which read: "To his Holiness Pope Francis, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go."

Israel hails Arab League's stance on land swaps

Israel's lead peace negotiator Tzipi Livni Tuesday praised as "important" a concession by the Arab League that Israel and the Palestinians could trade land in a bid to move the peace process forward. Israel's Peres to visit Pope Francis

Israel's President Shimon Peres is to meet Pope Francis on a three-day visit to Italy that will begin on Monday, an official statement said. The Israeli president is also set to visit the city of Assisi, birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi, after whom the new pontiff -- Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina -- chose his name. There he will be greeted by "hundreds of Franciscan monks" at the central Basilica, the statement fro the presidency said. Peres will also hold talks with Italy's prime minister and its president on Tuesday, the statement said.

Netanyahu cannot confirm report of Syrian chemical arms use - Kerry

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could not confirm comments by the Israeli military's top intelligence analyst that Syrian government forces had used chemical weapons, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday. "I talked to Prime Minister Netanyahu this morning. I think it is fair for me to say that he was not in a position to confirm that in the conversation that I had," Kerry told a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels. "I don't know yet what the facts are."
