Netanyahu cannot confirm report of Syrian chemical arms use - Kerry

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could not confirm comments by the Israeli military's top intelligence analyst that Syrian government forces had used chemical weapons, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday. "I talked to Prime Minister Netanyahu this morning. I think it is fair for me to say that he was not in a position to confirm that in the conversation that I had," Kerry told a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels. "I don't know yet what the facts are."

Israel president pardons sick Palestinian prisoner

Israeli President Shimon Peres on Thursday pardoned a Palestinian prisoner who had carried out two long-term hunger strikes, citing concerns over his health, a statement from his office said. "Peres accepted the recommendation of the Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, in coordination with the security services, and signed the release of Mohammed Kamal al-Taj," the statement said. "The decision to release him was taken on humanitarian grounds as the prisoner was ill with a serious medical condition," it added.

Cameron calls on Israel to restart peace process

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday urged Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to reopen peace talks with the Palestinians as they met for the funeral of former British leader Margaret Thatcher. The pair also discussed ways to deepen economic relations between the two countries and the ongoing Syrian crisis. "The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of efforts to restart the Israeli-Palestinian peace process for the future of Israel and the Palestinians and the region," said a read-out of the meeting issued by Cameron's office.

Former Israeli minister: Netanyahu not ready to pay the price for peace

Israel will not yield to 'subhuman' terrorists

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday Israel would not give in to "subhuman" terrorists, as the Jewish state honoured its slain soldiers and civilians killed in militant attacks. Netanyahu, at a ceremony at the Mount Herzl national cemetery, pointed to the case of Israeli toddler Adele Biton, still in critical condition after being hurt in a stone-throwing attack on her mother's car in the West Bank a month ago. Israel leaders warn army ready to face any threats

Israeli leaders warned the army was prepared to meet all threats facing it, as they paid tribute to fallen troops and civilian deaths in terror attacks at Memorial Day ceremonies on Sunday. "Since our inception as a people, we had to fight for our freedom and our existence," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at an afternoon ceremony. "Today, too, there are those who threaten to annihilate us -- they haven't succeeded in the past, they won't ever succeed", he said in an apparent reference to Iran.

Canada hails 'special friendship' with Israel

Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird hailed his country's "special friendship" with Israel in Jerusalem talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. The two men "reaffirmed the close and special friendship that underpins the bilateral relationship between our two countries," a joint statement said. "Today, the Jewish people are masters of their own fate, like other nations, in their own sovereign, Jewish state. "Like other nations, Israel has the right to defend itself, by itself," the statement said.

Peres hopes for Canada role in peace process

Israel's President Shimon Peres said on Tuesday he hoped Canada would play a role in any future peace talks with the Palestinians, after a meeting with Foreign Minister John Baird in Jerusalem. "Canada played a role in the peace process which, when we started, had two levels of negotiations: bi-national and multinational," the president said in a statement. "I hope Canada can once again play a role in the peace process," he said, praising Canada's "deep friendship to Israel."
