Football: Ethiopia snatch win to keep World Cup dream alive

Ethiopia snatched a dramatic 1-0 home victory over Botswana on Sunday to keep alive hopes of a first appearance at the World Cup in Brazil next year. Substitute Getaneh Kebede, who replaced fellow-striker Adane Girma for the second half in Addis Ababa, snatched the lone goal two minutes from time in the high-altitude east African city. Ethiopia returned to the top of Group A with seven points, two more than overnight leaders South Africa, who overcame Central African Republic 2-0 in Cape Town thanks to goals from Thabo Matlaba and Bernard Parker.

DURBAN, South Africa, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Mali sealed a quarter-final place at the African Nations Cup.after recovering from conceding a penalty after 35 seconds to draw 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday. Mali finished second behind Ghana in Group B and now play hosts South Africa in Durban on Saturday. They made a dreadful start, the Congolose awarded a penalty inside the first minute when Momo Sissoko brought down Yves Diba, allowing Dieumerci Mbokani to score his second from the spot at the tournament.

Soccer-Dembele gets first Mali call-up ahead of Nations Cup

BAMAKO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Mali have called up uncapped striker Mana Dembele from French club Clermont Foot to replace Mamadou Samassa in their training squad for the African Nations Cup finals, officials said on Tuesday. Italy-based Samassa pulled out of the team's preparations in Bamako because of injury. Dembele, who was born in Paris, has scored seven goals in Ligue 2 this season, prompting his first call-up by Mali.
