Football: Etoile Sahel fight back to force CAF Cup draw

Multi African title winners Etoile Sahel of Tunisia hit back twice to hold JSM Bejaia of Algeria 2-2 in a CAF Confederation Cup play-off this weekend. Etoile, the only club to win all five CAF club competitions, are now favoured to win the return game at home and qualify for the group phase. On a good weekend for seeded sides, Stade Malien of Mali, FUS Rabat of Morocco and Entente Setif of Algeria all won at home. Stade hammered Lydia Academic of Burundi 5-0, FUS edged FAR 1-0 in a Rabat derby and Setif were 2-0 winners over US Bitam of Gabon.

Football: Cairo giants square off in CAF Champions League

Bitter Cairo rivals Al-Ahly and Zamalek were pitted against each other when the CAF Champions League draw was made in Cairo Tuesday. The two most successful teams in the premier African club competition are in Group A with AC Leopards of Congo Brazzaville and Orlando Pirates of South Africa. Al-Ahly defeated Esperance of Tunisia 3-2 over two legs last November to claim a record-extending seventh African title. However, Cairo derbies that would ordinarily attract sell-out 80,000 crowds are set to be played amid the eerie silence of empty stadiums.

Football: Veteran Zuma lifts SuperSport into Cup final

Veteran midfielder Sibusiso Zuma scored an extra-time penalty to earn SuperSport United a 3-2 triumph over Platinum Stars Wednesday in a South African FA Cup semi-final thriller. Zuma, who played at the 2002 World Cup and turns 38 in June, gave Botswana goalkeeper Kabelo Dembe no chance with a low shot into the corner after Ghanaian Edwin Gyimah had been fouled. Title-holders SuperSport will face double-seeking Kaizer Chiefs, who ousted second-tier United FC 2-1 last Saturday, in the May 25 final with Indian Ocean city Durban the likely venue.
