Syria refugee children in Lebanon risk starvation

Nearly 2,000 Syrian refugee children in Lebanon are in danger of starving to death if they do not receive immediate treatment, UNICEF said Tuesday, warning of a looming malnutrition crisis. "Malnutrition is a new, silent threat among refugees in Lebanon," said Annamaria Laurini, the UN children agency's representative in Beirut. The problem is linked to "poor hygiene, unsafe drinking water, diseases, lack of immunisation and improper feeding practices of young children," she said.

5 years ago, Syria was world's second-largest refugee host. Now, it's set to be the world's biggest source of refugees

Syrians fleeing the civil war in their homeland are about to displace Afghans as the world's largest refugee population, the United Nations said Tuesday. Briefing the General Assembly by video link, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres painted a devastating picture of the humanitarian crisis as a result of the three-year conflict. He said nearly 2.5 million Syrians have now registered as refugees with UNHCR in neighboring countries in the Middle East.

Australia returns asylum-seekers to Indonesia in lifeboat

A lifeboat carrying asylum-seekers has washed up on Indonesia's main Java island, with those on board saying Australian authorities transferred them to the vessel and turned it around, officials said Tuesday. It was the latest asylum-seeker turn-back by Canberra under its military-led operation aimed at stopping an influx of would-be refugees who board rickety boats in Indonesia and make the perilous sea crossing to Australia.

Jolie said meeting with orphaned Syrian children in the eastern Bekaa Valley was a "heart-rending experience" and thanked Lebanon for assisting Syrian refugees, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said in statement.

Australia asks impoverished Cambodia to take some asylum seekers

By Prak Chan Thul PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Australia asked Cambodia, one of Asia's poorest countries, on Saturday to take in asylum seekers detained while trying to reach the Australian coast and Cambodia said it would think about it. Australia's government came to power last year partly because of a tough stance on asylum seekers arriving from Indonesia with Prime Minister Tony Abbott promising to "stop the boats".
