RugbyU: Injured Hipkiss announces retirement

Former England centre Dan Hipkiss has been forced into retirement by a shoulder injury, he announced on Wednesday. The 30-year-old sustained the injury while playing for Bath against Wasps in the English Premiership in January and was subsequently advised to retire by doctors. Formerly with Leicester, he played 13 times for England and made his last international appearance against Wales during the 2010 Six Nations.

RugbyU: Deans challenges Cooper to be more assertive

Coach Robbie Deans has challenged playmaker Quade Cooper to assert himself in his tour game against the British and Irish Lions if he wants to play for the Wallabies in next month's three-Test series. The maverick fly-half, who clashed with Deans over his coaching style last year, was left out of a 25-man initial Wallaby squad on Sunday for the Lions series, but Deans said a further six players were to be added to the final squad on June 10.

Coach Robbie Deans left out the World Cup number 10 and instead has chosen James O'Connor as his fly-half in the Wallaby squad. Former rugby league international back Israel Folau is one of three uncapped players named in the squad along with ACT Brumbies skipper and backrower Ben Mowen and his teammate and back Christian Lealiifano.

Toulon hero Jonny Wilkinson says winning the European Cup was an even greater feeling than lifting the Rugby World Cup. The 33-year-old fly-half kicked four from four, including the clinching conversion, to help Toulon to a 16-15 victory over Clermont in Dublin's Lansdowne Road stadium on Saturday. It's 10 years since he fired England to World Cup glory with a last-ditch drop goal to beat hosts Australia, but he insisted that Saturday's victory meant even more to him.
