Gazprom slips from top profit spot with $38 bn

The world's largest gas company Gazprom on Tuesday reported $38 billion in net profits for 2012, a decline of 10 percent from the previous year that deprived it of its status as the world's most profitable company. The profits were still the third-biggest of any global company last year, but Gazprom's profitability was limited by falling sales in the domestic market, combined with rising costs. Profits for 2012 amounted to 1.183 trillion rubles ($38.17 billion) compared with 1.307 trillion rubles ($42.2 billion) in 2011, the Russian gas leviathan said in a statement.

IEA trims 2013 oil demand growth forecast

The International Energy Agency forecast Thursday that global demand for oil would grow by 795,000 barrels per day to a total of 90.6 million barrels (mb/d), an estimate that was just slightly lower than its previous outlook, as a decline in Europe partially offset growth elsewhere. But the IEA cautioned in a monthly report that falling oil prices did not necessarily foreshadow a "bear market" and added: "There are signs that some of the recent easing of upward price pressures could be relatively short lived." wai/ric
