Formula One: Alonso thrills Spain with stylish win

Two-time champion Fernando Alonso paid a warm tribute to his Ferrari team and the massive Spanish crowd on Sunday after he drove to a dominant victory for Ferrari at the Spanish Grand Prix. His win thrilled his compatriots in a 95,000-strong flag-waving home crowd that roared in delight after he had crossed the line to grab his second win at his home race and third on Spanish soil in recent years. "It was fantastically emotional and the fans really helped because you feel the support from everyone," said Alonso.

Formula One: Vettel, Alonso play down Barcelona pace

World championship leader Sebastian Vettel and home favourite Fernando Alonso both played down the significance of their performances on Friday after they had dominated proceedings on the opening day of practice for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. The 31-year-old Spaniard, who was fastest for Ferrari in the morning and then narrowly second quickest behind the triple world champion's Red Bull in the afternoon, said he remained optimistic of realising his dream, but conceded it would be difficult.

Rosberg grabs pole, Alonso to start 5th at Spanish Grand Prix

Montmelo, Spain, May 11 (EFE).- German Mercedes-Benz driver Nico Rosberg grabbed pole position for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, while Spain's Fernando Alonso, who drives for Ferrari, will start fifth. Rosberg snagged the third pole of his career with a time of 1:20.718 in Saturday's qualifying session at the Circuit de Catalunya; he also started first in the previous Formula One race, held three weekends ago in Bahrein, but finished a disappointing ninth. Rosberg will be joined on the front row by teammate Lewis Hamilton, who posted a time of 1:20.972.

Formula One: Rosberg cautious despite Spanish GP pole

Nico Rosberg secured his third career pole position as Mercedes completed a hat-trick of qualifying successes - and then warned that he is worried his tyres will let him down in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix. The 27-year-old German led the way as his team locked out the front row of Saturday's grid but he was immediately concerned afterwards that he does not endure a repeat of his problems at last month's Bahrain Grand Prix where he limped home ninth.

Formula One: Vettel satisfied with third on Spanish GP grid

Defending world champion and championship leader Sebastian Vettel said he was satisfied with qualifying third on Saturday for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix. The world championship leading German, in his Red Bull, was unable to keep pace with the two Mercedes driven by pole sitter Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. He said: "I am quite happy to be honest. Yesterday and this morning I was really happy, and I think we improved the car so I think we are in good shape." Only once has a driver who failed to qualifying on the front row won the race.

Formula One: Rosberg on pole for Mercedes

Nico Rosberg grabbed pole position as his Mercedes team completed a hat-trick of qualifying successes by sweeping the front row Saturday for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix. The 27-year-old German clocked a dazzling best lap time of 1min 20.718sec to outpace his nearest rival and Mercedes team-mate Briton Lewis Hamilton by two-tenths of a second. After poles secured by Hamilton in China and Rosberg in Bahrain, this was a magnificent treble top for the resurgent Mercedes outfit as they outclassed their rivals at the Circuit de Catalunya.
