Football: Platinum close gap as Chiefs crash

Leaders Kaizer Chiefs lost and closest rivals Platinum Stars won Wednesday to create an intriguing climax in the South African Premiership title race. Ajax Cape Town inflicted only a second league defeat in 28 matches on Chiefs by winning 3-1 at home before a 40,000 crowd to ease their relegation worries in the richest national football championship on the continent. Platinum took 83 minutes to break down a stubborn Maritzburg United defence and the goal from Malawi midfielder Robert Mg'ambi set up a 2-0 triumph in north-west mining town Rustenburg.

Football: Woodwork foils Platinum in big-game flop

Platinum Stars hit the woodwork twice in a goalless South African Premiership stalemate with leaders Kaizer Chiefs Sunday that rarely matched its top-of-the-table billing. A back heel from Namibia striker Henrico Botes came back off the post midway through the opening half and a close-range shot by defender Benson Mhlongo rebounded from the underside of the crossbar near half-time.

Football: Dramatic win keeps Pirates' hat-trick hopes afloat

Orlando Pirates scored deep in stoppage time to pip Wits University 1-0 Saturday and keep alive slim hopes of a third consecutive South African Premiership title. Former Wits midfielder Sifiso Myeni came off the bench after a lengthy injury absence to snatch the winner nine minutes into injury time with an edge-of-box shot at Mbombela Stadium. Success was particularly sweet for Myeni and coach Roger de Sa, a former South Africa goalkeeper who was surprisingly fired by Wits just before this season kicked off.

RugbyU: Bonus point eludes victorious Cheetahs

Central Cheetahs' joy at defeating fellow South African side Southern Kings 26-12 Saturday in the Super 15 was tempered by the failure to secure a bonus point. The surprise side this season in the southern hemisphere provincial championship scored three tries but a fourth, which would have earned an extra point and taken them top of the South African conference, proved elusive. It was not from lack of trying at Free State Stadium in this central city as substitute forwards Rynard Landman (twice) and Frans Viljoen got over the Kings line only to be held up.

RugbyU: Big opening pays final dividend for Chiefs

A powerful opening burst laid the foundations for the Waikato Chiefs' 37-29 victory over the Coastal Sharks here Saturday in a re-run of last year's Super 15 final. The victory saw the Chiefs arrest a two-match losing streak and overtake the Auckland Blues at the head of the New Zealand conference while the injury-ravaged Sharks slumped to their third consecutive loss. Both sides took a four-try bonus point from the match, which was as much a reflection of fragile defensive systems as it was a testimony to their attacking intent.

Football: Swallows rise after Mashego goal

Moroka Swallows rose three places to seventh in the South African Premiership table Friday after a 1-0 away win against Maritzburg United. Former South Africa striker Katlego Mashego snatched the match-winner in first-half stoppage-time, giving goalkeeper Shu-aib Walters no chance with a close-range shot off a cut-back. The leading eight finishers after the mid-May finish of the league qualify for the Top 8 Cup next season, a winners-take-all knockout competition with a $880,000 (660,000 euros) prize.

RugybU: Springbok Kirchner joins Leinster

Springboks and Northern Bulls full-back Zane Kirchner has signed a two-year contract with Irish province Leinster, his franchise said Monday. Kirchner, 28, is the latest South African rugby union star to move abroad as the financial rewards are far greater in Europe, especially with the rand struggling against major currencies. Pretoria-based Bulls, three time winners of the southern hemisphere Super Rugby championship, will lose fly-half Morne Steyn and lock Juandre Kruger to French Top 14 sides this year.
