Football: Khune voted star of South African season

Itumeleng Khune stole the show at the South African end-of-season football awards ceremony in Johannesburg Sunday. The 25-year-old Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper was voted Player of the Season by the 16 top-tier coaches and collected three other prizes. Khune also won the players' player and best goalkeeper awards in the Premiership plus best player in the FA Cup. Chiefs won both competitions this season and the most popular football club in the country will compete in the 2014 CAF Champions League.

Football: Kaizer Chiefs clinch title after eight-year wait

Kaizer Chiefs won the South African Premiership for the first time in eight seasons Wednesday despite being held 1-1 at home by SuperSport United. Lehlohonolo Majoro put Chiefs ahead four minutes into the second half in northern city Polokwane and Sibusiso Zuma equalised two minutes from time. Chiefs went into the penultimate-round fixture at Peter Mokaba Stadium needing one point to clinch the championship having led since the start of the season.

Football: Kaizer Chiefs almost there as rivals falter

Kaizer Chiefs need just one point from two games to secure the South African Premiership title after challengers Platinum Stars and Orlando Pirates faltered Saturday. Inactive Chiefs players saw Platinum lose 2-1 away to lowly Golden Arrows while a stoppage-time goal condemned Pirates to a 1-0 home defeat by Mamelodi Sundowns. Platinum trail Chiefs by three points, have a much poorer goal difference and only one match left while Pirates, champions for the past two seasons, are seven points behind the leaders and cannot catch them.

RugbyU: Watson, Catrakilis star as Kings bounce back

Flank Luke Watson and fly-half Demetri Catrakilis starred as Southern Kings put a three-week Super 15 nightmare behind them by defeating Otago Highlanders 34-27 Saturday. Injury-prone Watson was given back the captaincy of the southern hemisphere rookies and scored two pushover tries during the first half at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Indian Ocean city Port Elizabeth. Catrakilis became the first South African in seven years to top 100 points in his debut Super Rugby season as he reached 107 thanks to four conversions and two penalty goals from seven shots at goal.
