Cricket: Morkel stars as Titans hold off Lions in thriller

Former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel starred as Titans beat leaders Highveld Lions by seven runs Tuesday in a South African Twenty20 Challenge thriller. Morkel contributed an unbeaten 40, including three fours and two sixes, to help Titans reach 178-5 off 20 overs at SuperSport Park and he took 3-26 as Lions fell just short at 171-6 in reply. Victory lifted defending champions Titans two places to second, seven points behind Lions with two rounds left. The table toppers automatically qualify for the final and the second and third teams play off for the other place.

Football: Double injury blow for South Africa

South Africa have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of a must-win 2014 World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic this weekend. Centre-back Siyabonga Sangweni and left-back Tsepo Masilela, who would have been probable starters for the Group A fixture at Cape Town Stadium Saturday, are ruled out by knee injuries. Eric Mathoho of Kaizer Chiefs replaces Sangweni of Orlando Pirates and Tebogo Langerman of Mamelodi Sundowns comes in for Masilela as South Africa seek a first win after draws last year against Ethiopia and Botswana.

Football: Cup win keeps Kaizer Chiefs on track for double

Kaizer Chiefs stayed on course for a domestic double by defeating Polokwane City 2-0 Saturday to reach the South African FA Cup quarter-finals. Sthembiso Ngcobo put the league leaders ahead during the first half and fellow striker Kingston Nkhatha added a second goal in the closing stages at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Indian Ocean city Durban. Polokwane, a second-tier side that included former Democratic Republic of Congo goalkeeper Nkueni Mayala and ex-Malawi striker Esau Kanyenda, were never overawed and came close to scoring before falling behind.

A superb first-half team effort set up Brumbies of Australia for a 29-10 triumph over Sharks of South Africa in a surprisingly one-sided Super 15 clash Saturday. Brilliant ball retention and powerful straight and angled running by backs and forwards earned the visitors a four-try bonus point before going into the interval 26-3 ahead at Kings Park in this Indian Ocean city. A fourth consecutive victory since the southern hemisphere championship season kicked lifted leaders Brumbies to 23 points, six ahead of defending champions Waikato Chiefs of New Zealand.

Football: Liberian Laffor gives Sundowns lucky win

Liberian Anthony Laffor snatched the winner as Mamelodi Sundowns gained a lucky 1-0 win over 10-man Golden Arrows Friday in a South African FA Cup last-16 tie. Durban-based Arrows hit the woodwork three times and had Masonwabe Bovu harshly sent off just after half-time before former Liberia captain Laffor struck nine minutes from time at Loftus Versfeld. Laffor controlled a Tebogo Langerman cross superbly with his chest and although he did not connect cleanly with the ball, his shot found the net between a defender and goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede.

Sarel Pretorius came back to haunt the NSW Waratahs as South Africa's Central Cheetahs stretched their winning streak over the struggling Australian side to three games in Sydney on Friday. The Cheetahs edged out the Waratahs 27-26, scoring three tries to two to follow up their win over the Otago Highlanders in New Zealand last weekend. Scrum-half Pretorius was the architect behind the Cheetahs' triumph, putting winger Raymond Rule over for the match-winning try 10 minutes from fulltime.

Football: South Africa axe captain Khumalo for World Cup tie

South Africa dropped captain Bongani Khumalo Thursday for a 2014 World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic in Cape Town this month. Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who skippers South African Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs, takes over the armband for a March 23 fixture Bafana Bafana (The Boys) must win to have a realistic chance of reaching Brazil. South Africa dropped four points in the first two rounds last year after 1-1 draws at home to Ethiopia and away to Botswana and are only third in Group A, two points off the pace.
