Cycling: Sky boss says Froome is their Tour leader

Chris Froome is set to lead Team Sky's bid to win this year's Tour de France, principal Dave Brailsford said Monday. Ever since Froome played a key role last year in helping team-mate Bradley Wiggins become the first Briton to win cycling's most prestigious road race there has been intense speculation as to which one of the riders would be in the 'number one' position for the 2013 edition.

Italian Salvatore Puccio took possession of the Giro d'Italia pink jersey from overnight leader Mark Cavendish on Sunday as Team Sky and race favourite Bradley Wiggins claimed their maiden team time trial win on a Grand Tour on the island of Ischia. Cavendish had sprinted to victory in the opening stage of the three-week race on Saturday to pull on the race leader's pink jersey for the third time in his career.

Italian Salvatore Puccio of Team Sky took possession of the Giro d'Italia pink jersey from overnight leader Mark Cavendish on Sunday after Team Sky dominated a stage two team time trial on the island of Ischia. Cavendish had sprinted to victory in the opening stage of the three-week race on Saturday to pull on the race leader's pink jersey for the third time in his career. But despite their best efforts, Cavendish and his Omega-Pharma team were no match for Team Sky over the winding 17.4 km course on the scenic island which sits off the coast of Naples.

Cycling: Nibali is main Giro threat, says Wiggins

Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins on Thursday singled out Vincenzo Nibali as his main rival for the Giro d'Italia crown but said the battle for the race's pink jersey could be wide open. Wiggins comes into the three-week race, which begins Saturday in Naples, as a huge favourite given his comprehensive and historic yellow jersey triumph in 2012, when he finished ahead of British teammate Chris Froome.

Sports: Olympic champ to plead for India's Games return

India's sole individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra has been selected to appeal for the country's return to the ranks of the International Olympic Committee, the sports ministry said Friday. The Indian Olympic Association's membership of the IOC was suspended in December after Lalit Bhanot, who is facing corruption charges over the scandal-tainted 2010 Commonwealth Games, was elected its secretary general.

Cycling: Wiggins expects last-minute decision on Tour

Bradley Wiggins on Monday claimed Team Sky could wait until the Tour de France is underway before deciding their team leader for the race. Wiggins, 33, won the Tour, as well as a gold medal in the Olympic time trial, last year and starts his attempt to become the first Briton to win the Giro D'Italia in Naples on Saturday. In November, team principal Dave Brailsford confirmed that Chris Froome, who completed a victory in the Tour de Romandy at the weekend, would be the team's principal rider for the Tour de France.

Swimming: Irvine clocks fastest 200m butterfly of the year

Australian Grant Irvine clocked the fastest 200m butterfly time in the world this year at the national world championship trials in Adelaide on Monday. Irvine, 22, shaved more than one second off his personal best time, coming home in 1:55.32 to book his place in the Australian team for the Barcelona world titles in July. His time was the second fastest ever by an Australian. He came home well ahead of London Olympian Chris Wright (1:57.79), whose time left him just outside the benchmark for selection.

Cycling: Froome boosts Tour de France bid with Romandie win

British rider Chris Froome won the Tour of Romandie on Sunday for his third big win of the season. The 27-year-old Team Sky cyclist - the Olympic time-trial bronze medalist and second in last year's Tour de France - had 54 seconds to spare over second-placed Slovenian Simon Spilak while Portugal's Rui Costa filled third spot just as he did last year. Germany's time-trial specialist Tony Martin displayed his expertise in the discipline by winning Sunday's final stage in Geneva.
