Mortar rounds fired on a central district of the Syrian capital Damascus on Monday killed two people, state news agency SANA reported.
"Two citizens were killed and others were injured by mortars fired by terrorists at Al-Mawassam Square in the Qassaa neighbourhood," the agency said.
The Syrian government and state media regularly term opposition fighters "terrorists".
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group based in Britain, also reported mortar fire had killed two people in the capital, though it said the attack was in Bab Tuma neighbourhood.
