Ex-sailor jailed over Australian navy weapons theft

A former sailor was jailed Monday for more than three years after overpowering a guard and stealing a cache of weapons from an Australian navy vessel. Matthew Evans, 26, was sentenced in the Darwin Supreme Court after donning camouflage clothing and a balaclava to raid his old ship, HMAS Bathurst, in the northern city in November last year. The court heard Evans went aboard and overpowered a duty sailor, threatening him with a knife and tying him up.

India's 'dhow' shipbuilders sunk by anti-piracy ban

Shailesh Madiyar forlornly surveys the giant shipyard in the Indian port of Mandvi. A place synonymous with wooden boat-building for centuries, it now lies largely deserted. "Four years ago, around 20 ships were being made at any one time, now there are just two," says Madiyar, of the Mandvi shipbuilders' association. "These days, no more than five or six are made in a year," he said, gesturing towards around a dozen half-built boats which have been shored up like carcasses after construction was abandoned.

USS Freedom to arrive in Manila Tuesday, April 9

The US Embassy in Manila on Monday announced that the USS Freedom (LCS-1), the US Navy's first littoral combat ship, will dock at the Manila South Harbor Tuesday,April 9. The visit will highlight the strong historic, community, and military relations between the United States and the Republic of the Philippines. Balikatan to make PN, USN more 'interoperable'

With two of its frigates, the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (PF-16) and BRP Rajah Humabon (PF-11), participating in the naval phase of "Balikatan 2013" which formally started Friday, the Philippine Navy (PN) announced that the exposure to American training and techniques will make it more "interoperable" with the US Navy. "PN ships and units will conduct various maritime exercises and trainings (with the US Navy) for capability enhancement and subject matter exchanges," PN spokesperson Lt. Cmdr.

The USS Tortuga (LSD-46) arrived Tuesday at the Manila South Harbor and will be participating in this year's "Balikatan Exercises" in Luzon. After her Manila stopover, the amphibious dock landing ship of the US 7th Fleet based in Sasebo, Japan will sail towards Subic Bay, Zambales. A mixture of the Philippine Navy (PN)'s most modern and vintage ships will be participating in this year "Balikatan" Exercise which will commence this April 5 to 17. Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic, Navy spokesperson, said that the PN ships are the BRP Gregory Del Pilar (PF-15) and BRP Rajah Humabon (PF-11). The BRP Gregorio Del Pilar is a Hamilton-class cutter commissioned by the PN in December 14, 2011. The vessel was acquired by the Philippines in March 13, 2011.

One dock worker remained missing late Wednesday after a new mishap involving a Carnival cruise ship, which broke free from moorings in a US port, the company said. Two employees were thrown into the water when high winds caused the Carnival Triumph to break free in the Gulf Coast port of Mobile, Alabama, where it was docked after a hellish four-day ordeal last month. Television pictures showed a large hole on the stern of the ship, apparently on a passenger deck half way up the side of the vessel.

A Caribbean cruise here has admitted that the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is still investigating the “suspicious” death of a woman on board one of its ships during a Caribbean cruise. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line officials said a 64-year-old Virginia woman was found dead in her cabin aboard the Enchantment of the Seas last Sunday on the last day of a weeklong cruise to the Bahamas.

Titanic II titan unveils Australian dinosaur park plan

An eccentric Australian mining magnate who is building a replica of the ill-fated Titanic on Saturday unveiled his latest scheme -- a park of giant robotic dinosaurs. Clive Palmer, who last month in New York launched an ambitious plan to build and sail the "Titanic II", said he had ordered more than 100 life-size dinosaur robots from China to populate his north Australian resort. "We'll have the world's biggest dinosaur exhibit, with 165 animatronic dinosaurs," Palmer said.
