After dismissing worries, Calif. governor acknowledges Bay Bridge might not open by Labor Day

BERKELEY, Calif. - Gov. Jerry Brown said Monday that he does not know if the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will open over Labor Day weekend because of safety concerns. It's the first time the governor acknowledged serious worries about the structural integrity of the $6.4 billion infrastructure project to build a new eastern span of the bridge. Brown had dismissed concerns about broken bolts earlier this month.

Official: Repair for broken rods on San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge could cost $5M-$10M

OAKLAND, Calif. - The planned repair for broken seismic safety rods on the new span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge could cost between $5 million and $10 million, a state transportation official said Wednesday. Officials still don't know whether the repair will be done in time for the span's scheduled Labor Day opening, but say it's still possible. A decision is expected May 29. California Transportation Commission Executive Director Andre Boutros told a meeting of the Bay Area Toll Authority that the repair for the 32 snapped rods involves installing steel saddles.

World Bank blacklists Canada's SNC-Lavalin

The World Bank banned Canadian engineering firm SNC-Lavalin from its projects Wednesday over corruption in a Bangladesh bridge project and another project. SNC-Lavalin was debarred from working on bank projects for 10 years after former company officials were linked to alleged high-level bribery in the tainted project, which led to the World Bank canceling a $1.2 billion loan to Bangladesh for the Padma Bridge project last June.

TIB for utmost transparency in Padma Bridge project

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Thursday urged the government to ensure utmost transparency and accountability in construction of the much-talked-about Padma Bridge project.In a statement, TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said the Finance Minister on Tuesday announced a five-year plan for the construction Padma Bridge and assured people of floating tenders for the main bridge in June next.

Int’l tenders for Padma project by June: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday said the government would invite international tenders by June next for the construction of the country’s much-hyped 6.15-kilometre long Padma Multipurpose Bridge project. “Tender documents will be out in next month or in first week of June for Padma,” he told a pre-budget meeting with the Economic Reporters Forum (ERD) at his ministry. Muhith informed that the tenders would be floated for three types of works -- consultants to supervise the construction of the bridge, construction of the main bridge and river training.

Gaping hole blocks truck traffic between Romania, Bulgaria

Truck traffic between Bulgaria and Romania was halted Tuesday after a huge hole opened on a bridge over the Danube that carries the main cross-border route between the two countries. The gap in the road section of the bridge -- which also includes a rail section -- revealed the structure's steel reinforcements and necessitated urgent repair work, Bulgaria's road agency said. The agency banned trucks weighing over 10 tonnes (22,000 pounds) from crossing the bridge. Lorries were redirected to ferry lines.
