In a cloning first, scientists create stem cells from adults

By Sharon Begley NEW YORK (Reuters) - Scientists have moved a step closer to the goal of creating stem cells perfectly matched to a patient's DNA in order to treat diseases, they announced on Thursday, creating patient-specific cell lines out of the skin cells of two adult men.

Japan laboratory says probe finds stem cell research data falsified

TOKYO - A Japanese government-funded laboratory says it has found data in a widely heralded stem-cell research paper was falsified, holding one researcher responsible for the fabrication. The research results were seen as a possible groundbreaking method for growing tissue to treat illnesses such as diabetes and Parkinson's disease using a simple lab procedure Scientists at the RIKEN research institute said Tuesday that discrepancies in research published in January in scientific journal Nature stemmed from image manipulation and data fabrication.

Japan gov't urges laboratory to probe STAP cell paper

The government said Tuesday it has urged a state-affiliated laboratory to thoroughly investigate its research paper on a trailblazing method to create stem cells that drew global attention, after one of the co-authors said it should be withdrawn until the creditability of its data is confirmed. "We've been informed that the Riken institute has been investigating from a technical perspective while gathering experts from both within and outside the country," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference.

Stem cell scientist calls for retraction of study

A co-author of a Japanese study that promised a revolutionary way to create stem cells has called for the headline-grabbing research to be retracted over claims its data was faulty. The findings, published by Japanese researcher Haruko Obokata and US-based scientists in the January edition of British journal Nature, outlined a simple and low-tech approach in the quest to grow transplant tissue in the lab.

Spain mum gives birth secretly, throws baby out of window

A Spanish woman gave birth in secret on Christmas Eve, cut the umbilical chord herself and threw the newborn out of the kitchen window, police said on Friday. The baby boy is now in hospital in a "serious condition", a police spokesman said. The 35-year-old woman, who lived with her parents in eastern Madrid, was detained on suspicion of attempting to kill the baby, police said. EU wants cloned meat off the table

The European Commission said Wednesday it would ban meat from cloned animals but stopped short of imposing restrictions on produce from the offspring of such animals, a hugely sensitive issue. Animal rights groups attacked the plan as not going far enough on an issue which has divided public opinion since the successful cloning of 'Dolly the Sheep' in the 1990s. Critics say cloning is unnatural, causes unnecessary suffering to animals and risks dangerous unintended consequences while supporters see it as offering untold new possibilities to improve human life.

Researchers make embryonic stem cells from skin

US researchers reported a breakthrough in stem cell research on Wednesday, describing how they have turned human skin cells into embyronic stem cells for the first time. The method described by Oregon State University scientists in the journal Cell, would not likely be able to create human clones, said Shoukhrat Mitalipov, senior scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.
