At least 10 people killed in Niger bombings: Western source

At least 10 people were killed on Thursday in twin car bombings that hit a military base and a French-owned uranium processing plant in Niger, officials said. "There were at least 10 dead" in the bombing at the military base in Agadez, a Western source told AFP while a Nigerian defence ministry spokesman said that there were dead "on both sides." A nearly simultaneous bombing at the uranium plant owned by France's nuclear giant Areva left the suicide bomber dead and wounded 13 local workers, according to the group. bh-cf-tmo/yad/txw

Iran seeks to speed up nuclear activity: IAEA

By Fredrik Dahl VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran is trying to accelerate its uranium enrichment program, a U.N. nuclear report showed, but experts said it was unclear when Tehran's new machines could start operating and how efficiently they would work. The Islamic state's progress in introducing next-generation centrifuges is closely watched in the West and Israel as it would enable Tehran to speed up accumulation of material that could be used to build atomic bombs. Iran denies any such aim.

Iran says IAEA report shows nuclear drive is peaceful

A new report by the UN atomic watchdog validates Iran's progress in its "peaceful" nuclear activities despite international sanctions, the country's envoy to the agency said on Thursday. The International Atomic Energy Agency's report said Iran had accelerated the installation of advanced uranium enrichment equipment at its central Natanz plant, and was potentially opening up a second route to developing the bomb. Ali Asghar Soltanieh, speaking to Fars news agency in Vienna, where the IAEA is based, said the report was proof of Iran's "technical and scientific success".

Iran expanding nuclear activities

Iran is making significant progress in expanding its nuclear programme, including in opening up a potential second route to developing the bomb, a new UN atomic agency report showed Wednesday. The International Atomic Energy Agency's latest quarterly update said that Tehran has accelerated the installation of advanced uranium enrichment equipment at its central Natanz plant. It also outlined further progress at a reactor under construction at Arak, also in central Iran, which Western countries fear could provide Iran with plutonium if the fuel is reprocessed.

Iran pushes ahead with nuclear plant that worries West

By Fredrik Dahl VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran is pressing ahead with the construction of a research reactor that Western experts say could eventually produce plutonium for a nuclear weapon if Tehran decides to make one, a U.N. report showed on Wednesday. In another development likely to worry the United States and its allies, the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran had added to its capacity to refine uranium, which can also provide the fissile core of a bomb if enriched to a high level.

India is willing to resume talks on nuclear energy with Japan

India is willing to resume talks with Japan on a civil nuclear energy deal during the forthcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Tokyo from next Monday, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said Wednesday. He made the comment in response to a question regarding media reports the Japanese leadership is ready to resume talks with India on civil nuclear cooperation that had been halted after concerns were raised within Japan in the aftermath of the core meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northeastern Japan.

NRC launches special inspection of NC nuclear plant shuttered by year-old data discovery

RALEIGH, N.C. - Federal regulators are launching a special inspection of a nuclear power plant outside North Carolina's capital city that was forced to shut down last week. A Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman said Wednesday that two specialists will study what led up to the shutdown after a problem was uncovered using year-old data. They want to know why a flaw inside the nuclear reactor wasn't found until Duke Energy employees took a new look at test results from last year.

Iran acts to expand sensitive nuclear capacity: diplomats

By Fredrik Dahl VIENNA (Reuters) - A U.N. nuclear agency report due this week is expected to show Iran further increasing its capacity to produce material that its adversaries fear could eventually be put to developing atomic bombs, Western diplomats said on Tuesday. But they said it is also likely to indicate that growth in Iran's most sensitive nuclear stockpile has been held back because some of it has been used for reactor fuel, potentially providing more time for diplomacy between Iran and major powers.
