Hong Kong pro-democracy alliance proposes election framework

A group of pro-democracy advocates in Hong Kong on Wednesday laid down the ground rules for the leadership election in 2017, when the territory can elect its leader by universal suffrage, to ensure what Beijing has promised comes true. "Our goals are clear and what we want to achieve have been said many, many years," convener of the Alliance for True Democracy and political science professor Joseph Cheng of the City University of Hong Kong told reporters.

Hong Kong dockworkers agree to pay offer, ending 40-day strike that slowed busy port

HONG KONG - Hong Kong dockworkers have accepted a 9.8 per cent pay increase, ending a 40-day strike that slowed traffic at one of the world's busiest ports. About 90 per cent of the workers voted late Monday in favour of the offer from four middleman contractors that provide staff to a container terminal operator controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.

Hong Kong port workers vote to end strike

Hundreds of workers at a Hong Kong container port operated by tycoon Li Ka-shing voted Monday to end a 40-day strike, one of the city's longest-ever, after their employers offered a 9.8 percent pay rise. The stoppage had disrupted traffic at Hong Kong's container port, the world's third busiest. Protests spread to the Central financial district, where workers staged demonstrations outside the headquarters of Li's Cheung Kong group. The strikers, who at the height of the stoppage numbered 450, had been demanding a 20 percent pay rise.

H.K. chief orders inquiry over ex-graft-buster

Hong Kong leader Leung Chun-ying said Thursday a committee will probe the former head of the territory's graft busting unit who reportedly spent public money on lavish gifts and on treating mainland officials to expensive meals while in office. The former British colony has effectively cleaned up its widely corrupt image in the 1960s that was rampant within the government and the police force after then British Gov. Murray MacLehose set up an independent organization that has from the beginning operated directly under the government head's control.

Hong Kong shares end down 0.30%

Hong Kong shares ended 0.30 percent lower on Thursday, following the release of weak employment and manufacturing data from the US and figures showing a slowdown in China's industrial production. The benchmark Hang Seng Index shed 68.71 points to end at 22,668.30 on turnover of HK$56.21 billion ($7.24 billion). Chinese shares ended down 0.17 percent. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 3.79 points to 2,174.12 on turnover of 59.9 billion yuan ($9.7 billion). pdh/jms

Hong Kong ferry crash report shows 'systemic failings'

Safety controls on passenger boats in Hong Kong suffer from "systemic failings" an inquiry found Tuesday after a ferry collision which claimed 39 lives in the city's worst sea disaster in decades. Pleasure boat Lamma IV was carrying more than 120 people to a fireworks display last October when it collided with the high-speed ferry Sea Smooth and partially sank near Lamma Island.

Hong Kong's pursuit of luxury defies Western gloom
