Nadal wins Madrid to lay down French Open marker

By Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Clay king Rafa Nadal sent another reminder he is not about to surrender his Roland Garros crown without a fight when he crushed Swiss 15th seed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2 6-4 to win the Madrid Open on Sunday. It was the Spanish world number five's fifth title since he returned from a seven-month injury layoff in February and was more evidence that his troublesome knees are not about to bring his career to a premature end.

Tennis: Nadal rules out 'arrogant' Madrid dream

Rafael Nadal insisted on Wednesday that it would be "arrogant" to consider himself the Madrid Masters favourite following the shock exit of world number one Novak Djokovic. Nadal began his campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 win over French world number 37 Benoit Paire to reach the third round. Djokovic's defeat to Grigor Dmitrov on Tuesday has made Nadal the strong favourite to claim his third title in Madrid.

Nadal avoids upset, reaches Madrid semis

Madrid, May 10 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal narrowly avoided defeat at the Mutua Madrid Open, pulling out a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 win Friday over countryman David Ferrer to secure a berth in the semifinals. Ferrer had victory in his sights when his opponent, serving down 4-6, 5-6, 15-30 on the scoreboard, found himself in no man's land after an ill-advised foray to the net.

Tennis: Nadal breezes into Madrid quarter-finals

Rafael Nadal safely booked his passage into the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters as he saw off Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 6-3 in just under an hour and 15 minutes. The World No.5 started brightly with his forehand in particular doing damage down the line to the Youzhny backhand and he broke the Russian to move 2-1 in front in the first set. Another blistering forehand down the line opened up another two break points for the Spaniard with Youzhny serving at 2-4 and a cute drop shot at the net secured the double break before two big serves closed out the set in the next game.

Madrid, May 9 (EFE).- Roger Federer came up well short in his bid to defend his title at the Mutua Madrid Open, losing 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in Thursday's third round to Japan's Kei Nishikori. The Swiss great, who had not played a tournament since mid-March at Indian Wells on hard court, was noticeably rusty during the one-hour, 35-minute match and largely beat himself with unforced errors from the baseline.

Nadal advances at Madrid Masters

Madrid, May 8 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal successfully kicked off his bid for a 40th career clay-court title, advancing to the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open with a 6-3, 6-4 victory Wednesday over Benoit Paire. The 37th-ranked Frenchman adopted an unorthodox strategy aimed at throwing off Nadal's rhythm, cutting rallies short with numerous drop shots - including 14 in the first set alone - and seeking to end points quickly with flat rockets off his backhand side.

Tennis: Nadal through but Azarenka out of Madrid

Rafael Nadal made a comfortable start to his quest for a third Madrid Masters title on Wednesday as he eased past Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-4. One break in each set was enough for Nadal as he overcame some impressive variety and touch shown by Paire early on to break when the World No.37 was serving at 2-3 down in the opening set, before eventually sealing it 6-3.

Tennis: Federer raring to go after two-month break

Roger Federer believes his two-month break from competing on the ATP Tour will help him as he prepares for a hectic few months between now and the US Open in September. The 17-time Grand Slam winner last played in Indian Wells where he was hampered by a back injury as he went out to Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals. "It took me a little time to get over my back issue from Indian Wells, but at the same time, that clashed with my vacation anyway, which was okay," he told a press conference on Sunday ahead of defending his Madrid Masters title.
