Tennis: Berdych books Miami semi-final berth

Seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych secured his semi-final berth at the Miami ATP Masters Thursday with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) win over Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov. In Friday's semi-finals Berdych will face either world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain or Canadian Milos Raonic, who were due to play later Thursday. Thanks to his quarter-final victory, Berdych is projected to rise from his current seventh in the world to number five next week.

The Italian couldn't find the court in the early going of Tuesday night's match, making 10 unforced errors in the first three games to allow the world No. 1 to race out to an early double-break lead. By contrast, Nadal came out strong from the outset, hitting heavy topspin ground strokes off both sides - as well as backhand slices - with depth and precision.

Top seed Rafael Nadal turned in a command performance in the middle of a security alert Tuesday as the entrance to the ATP and WTA Miami Masters was blocked for more than an hour. As police closed the lone public entrance and exit to the grounds and shut down most traffic on the main highway of Key Biscayne island on the basis of an unattended backpack, Nadal took to the court and demolished out-of-sorts Italian 14th seed Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2 in 62 minutes. Fognini played while injured as he lost to the Spaniard for the fourth time.

Nadal brushes off bomb scare to cruise through in Miami

Officials announced a suspicious package had been left near the main entrance to the sprawling tennis facility which was quickly locked down, keeping thousands of spectators from entering or leaving while Miami Dade police investigated.

Miami, Mar 25 (EFE).- Spain's Rafael Nadal defeated Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the round of 16 at the Sony Open in Key Biscayne, Florida. Spanish players fared badly at the Sony Open on Monday, with Nicolas Almagro, Roberto Bautista Agut, Carla Suarez Navarro and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez all losing. "I played a very complete match," Nadal said. The Spanish world No. 1's next opponent will be Italy's Fabio Fognini, who beat Bautista Agut 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Tennis: Nadal, Wawrinka advance in straight sets in Miami

Top seed Rafael Nadal and reigning Aussie Open champ Stanislas Wawrinka posted straight-set victories in the third round at the WTA and ATP Miami Masters hardcourt tournament on Monday. French Open champ Nadal needed just 59 minutes to rout Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, 6-1, 6-0 while Wawrinka cruised into the fourth round with a 7-5, 6-4 dismantling of Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France at Crandon Park.

Ruthless Nadal continues Miami rampage

Nadal rolls into 3rd round at Sony Open

Miami, Mar 23 (EFE).- Spanish world No. 1 Rafael Nadal rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, advancing to the third round of the Sony Open at the Crandon Park Tennis Center in Key Biscayne, Florida. "For me, to be back after two years, it's a great way to be back," Nadal said. Nadal's match did not start until 10:30 p.m. on Saturday due to the long matches played on Stadium Court by Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, as well as a one-hour rain delay.

Perhaps more than any other players on the ATP Tour, Hewitt and Nadal have constructed careers around the relentless fighting spirit that has come to characterizes their game and on Saturday the two warriors stared across the net at each other in a second round clash at the Sony Open.
