Tennis: Britain, Italy seek to end poor Davis Cup record

Great Britain and Italy look to end their long waits to reach the Davis Cup semi-finals with Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and colourful Italian Fabio Fognini key to their hopes. Italy haven't made the last four since 1998 while Britain, nine-time winners but whose last title came back in 1936, have not been in the semi-finals since 1981. Italy and Britain have met 15 times in the competition with the Italians winning 11 times, although their last meeting was back in 1984.

World number two Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday to book his semi-final berth at the Miami ATP Masters. Djokovic recovered an early break in the second set to notch the victory in one hour and 29 minutes. It was the first meeting between the two since Murray defeated the Serbian in the Wimbledon final to become the first Briton since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the All England Club's men's singles title.

Federer, twice a winner on the Miami hardcourts, needed just 62 minutes on a sweltering center court to dispose of Dutch qualifier Thiemo De Bakker 6-3 6-3 while Murray appeared to be adjusting just fine to life without coach Ivan Lendl, easing past Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-1.
