New Jersey trooper who led speedy joyride gets probation

By Lisa Barron NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey (Reuters) - A New Jersey state trooper who escorted a high-speed caravan of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches down the Garden State Parkway last year was sentenced to one year of probation after pleading guilty last month to a charge of tampering with records. Sergeant First Class Nadir Nassry, 48, was also sentenced to 75 hours of community service on Monday by Superior Court Judge Bradley Ferencz in Middlesex County.

Little girl pleads with Immigration not to deport grandpa

Charlotte, North Carolina, Apr 9 (EFE).- The Mexican Eduardo Mireles, a youth soccer coach in North Carolina, is running out of time to avoid deportation, while his granddaughter pleads with immigration authorities not to deport her grandpa. "I don't want them to take him away from me, he's very good, he has been with me since I was born, he's company for me and I love him very much. Please, help me keep him with us," Sharytin Hernandez, 8, said tearfully.

U.S. deports Mexican-born war veterans for minor crimes

Mexico City, Apr 8 (EFE).- About 1,000 Mexican nationals who served with the U.S. Armed Forces in Iraq and Vietnam have been deported to Mexico over the past few years for committing minor crimes, the daily Excelsior reported Monday. "In Tijuana (just across the border from San Diego, California) the presence of war veterans is growing, people trained in handling weapons and who oftentimes own several, which represents a risk," said the Mexican paper after noting that the situation recently sparked a protest at Playas de Rosarito.

U.S. releases hundreds of detained immigrants over budget concerns

WASHINGTON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - A U.S. government agency has released hundreds of illegal immigrants from detention due to budget uncertainties, as the "sequestration" budget cuts begin to bite. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which has facilities that can detain up to 34,000 people around the country, released "several hundred" people while their deportation cases proceed, ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said.

U.S. returns kids to deported Mexican father's custody

Sparta, North Carolina, Feb 19 (EFE).- A North Carolina judge decided Tuesday to return custody of three children to Mexican citizen Felipe Bautista Montes after a two-year legal battle that included his deportation and subsequent return to this country, along with lengthy court proceedings. "I feel exhausted," Montes told Efe upon emerging from the Alleghany County courthouse in Sparta. "Now I'm going to throw myself into getting my family ahead in Mexico. It was a long process, but I did it."

Britain blasts judges for 'ignoring' deportation rules

Britain's interior minister slammed the judiciary on Sunday, accusing judges of "subverting" democracy by ignoring rules aimed at deporting more foreign criminals. Home Secretary Theresa May, writing in The Mail on Sunday newspaper, said some judges had chosen to "ignore parliament's wishes" by disregarding guidance making clear that convicted criminals' rights to a family life had limits.
