Turkey car bombs death toll rises to 40: minister

The death toll from car bombings in a Turkish town near the border with Syria on Saturday has risen to 40, Interior Minister Muammer Guler said. He told NTV news channel that 100 people were also wounded when two explosive-laden cars blew up in the town of Reyhanli and added that 29 were in serious condition. nc/jmm/gd

Egypt says foils Qaeda-linked plot to attack Western embassy

Egypt's interior minister said on Saturday police arrested members of an Al-Qaeda linked cell that plotted to carry out a suicide bombing against a Western embassy and other targets in the country. Police "have delivered a successful blow against a terror cell plotting suicide bomb attacks," including a plot to attack a Western embassy which was in its final stages, Mohammed Ibrahim said at a press conference. Suicide bomber targets senior Iraq intel officer

A suicide bomber targeted the home of a senior Iraqi intelligence officer north of Baghdad on Saturday, killing three people, while three more died in other attacks, officials said. The bomber detonated a small tanker truck at the home of police Brigadier General Ismail al-Juburi, a senior officer for Nineveh province, killing his son, nephew and sister-in-law -- and wounding 21 others, police and a doctor said. It was not immediately clear if Juburi was present at the time of the attack, which took place in the Al-Sharqat area.

Gibraltar deports Turkish Al-Qaeda suspect

Police in Gibraltar deported to Spain on Friday a Turkish suspected Al-Qaeda member accused of plotting bombing attacks, who entered the British territory illegally, an official said. Cengiz Yalcin had been arrested in August in Spain along with two Chechen suspects who the Spanish interior ministry said were Al-Qaeda members plotting an attack in Europe. The three were released on bail by a judge in Madrid in March pending terrorism charges. Yalcin was arrested in Gibraltar on Wednesday, authorities said.

Third suspect arrested in rail plot didn't enter U.S. from Canada: feds

OTTAWA - A terror suspect recently arrested in the United States did not enter that country from Canada, the federal government said Friday. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney suggested the Tunisian-born man, who had been studying in Canada, could not actually have been here when he entered. "When we became aware of security concerns, he was back in Tunisia, and his study permit was not renewed," Kenney told a news conference.

Seven dead in Indonesian anti-terror raids

Indonesian police have shot dead seven terror suspects in raids over the past two days, including several with alleged links to a plot to bomb the Myanmar embassy, officials said Thursday. Thirteen suspects were captured alive as an elite police unit swooped on houses across the country's main island of Java, in the biggest counter-terrorism operation in Indonesia for months.

Nigerian president slams fresh attacks, warns insurgents

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday hit out at gunmen he called "armed terrorists" who launched attacks on military barracks, a prison and police stations in Bama town in which 55 people were killed. A statement released by his office in Abuja said Jonathan warned that his government's consideration of dialogue with insurgents should not be seen as a sign of weakness.

Hundreds protest against terrorism in Tunis

Hundreds of Tunisians, including police, human rights activists and political party representatives, protested on Friday against "terrorism" after the government said two wanted jihadist groups had ties with Al-Qaeda. Several hundred protesters gathered outside the national assembly shouting "Tunisia is free, terrorism out!" and waving placards with slogans including: "We support the security forces and the army in the war against terrorism."

Jihadist Al-Nusra chief wounded near Damascus

The leader of the powerful jihadist rebel force, Al-Nusra Front, was wounded by army bombing near the Syrian capital on Wednesday, a watchdog said. Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani was wounded with other members of his group in southern Damascus province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing militants in the area. Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman was only immediately able to say that Jawlani had been hit in the foot.
