Suspected Al-Qaeda militants launched a rocket and car bomb attack on an army headquarters in Yemen's main southern city of Aden that left six people dead Wednesday, a security official said. The assailants fired rocket-propelled grenades at the headquarters in the Tawahi district of Aden, before infiltrating the complex, he said. They also blew up a car bomb at the entrance. "Three soldiers and an attacker were killed in an exchange of fire," said the source, adding that two passers-by also died in the assault which he said was believed to be the work of Al-Qaeda.

Four killed in clashes between Yemeni soldiers and Al-Qaeda

ADEN (Reuters) - Two Yemeni soldiers and two al-Qaeda militants were killed on Tuesday during clashes in Yemen's western province of Al-Hadida, ministry of interior said on its website. An official source from the ministry said security forces detained four al-Qaeda militants during the early hours of the day. Fresh clashes then erupted, leading to the fighting in which the soldiers and militants were killed. The remaining al-Qaeda members fled to nearby mountains, leaving behind a car full of weapons, the source added.

Yemen police, Qaeda clash kills 4

Two Yemeni policemen and two Al-Qaeda suspects were killed in a clash Tuesday when extremists attacked a checkpoint in a bid to free four arrested comrades, the interior ministry said. The clash erupted after the security services detained "four Al-Qaeda militants at a checkpoint in (the western province of) Hudaydah" at dawn, the ministry said in a statement. Two hours later, Al-Qaeda militants in two cars, one of them booby-trapped, launched an attack on the checkpoint, it said.

Attempted jail break at Nigeria secret police HQ

Nigeria's secret police said on Sunday there had been an escape attempt by detainees at their headquarters, with unconfirmed reports that Boko Haram militants were involved. "There was an attempted jail break by our inmates when the suspect handler went to feed them," Department of State Services (DSS) spokeswoman Marilyn Ogar told AFP. Ogar did not provide details on the number of inmates involved nor disclose why they were being held but said an official statement would be issued later.

"First indications are that one soldier was killed and more were wounded." The Arsal region has seen a spillover of the conflict across the border as Syrian regime forces backed by fighters from Lebanon's Hezbollah press their campaign against rebels.

496 dead in Egypt 'terror' attacks since Morsi's ouster

Militants have killed 496 people in Egypt since the military ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, mostly soldiers and policemen, the foreign ministry said on Saturday. Houston-area man arrested in undercover FBI terrorism sting

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Houston-area man suspected of leading an anti-government group appeared in federal court on Friday to face charges of trying to rob an armored car with explosives and plotting to blow up U.S. government buildings. Robert James Talbot Jr., 38, of Katy, Texas, was arrested by U.S. agents Thursday after an eight-month federal probe as he was about to rob an armored car with inert explosives provided to him by informants who had entered his group, according to a criminal complaint filed in a U.S. federal court in Houston.
