Terror strikes anew in American homeland

America suddenly faced terror in the homeland Tuesday after carnage in Boston and a ricin scare jolted a largely peaceful run of luck since the September 11 attacks in 2001. Constantly rolling news coverage -- showing the moment when two murderous explosions sent flames and smoke spurting into the air near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday -- spooled endlessly on cable news stations.

Boston bombers chose troubling date for attack

Troubling anniversaries linked to US extremists have fueled speculation about who is behind the Boston bombings even though investigators have yet to publicly cast blame on any culprits. The twin bombs left at the marathon's finish line Monday, which killed three people and wounded more than 175, contain disturbing details that could be seen as aping Al-Qaeda. President Barack Obama has clearly accused terrorists of staging the attacks. But he also insisted that neither domestic, nor foreign militants, nor a "lone wolf" individual, had yet been implicated.

Turkey police arrest 10 over suspected links to Qaeda

Turkish police have arrested 10 people on charges of suspected links to Al-Qaeda, local media reported on Tuesday. The suspects are claimed to have provided weaponry and recruits for elements of the Syrian opposition, charges they vehemently deny, the Hurriyet newspaper said on its website. "We've been arrested just because we recite the Koran and we are Muslims aiding Syrians," it quoted one of the suspects as saying. Police conducted the raid to arrest the suspects in the central Anatolian province of Konya as part of an operation against the radical organisation.

A Saudi diplomat held hostage by Al-Qaeda in Yemen for more than a year has urged the kingdom to secure his release, in a new video published by the extremist network's media arm. Abdullah al-Khalidi, Saudi's deputy consul in the southern port of Aden, was dressed in a traditional black outfit and appeared to be in good health in the 19-minute video interview by Al-Malahem Media, apparently produced between February and March.

The deadliest bombings in the US

At least three people were killed and more than 100 were wounded Monday as two blasts struck the Boston Marathon, in what could be acts of terrorism. Following is a list of the main bombings to hit the United States over the past decades. September 11, 2001: Members of the Al-Qaeda network steer two passenger jets into the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center, causing them to collapse. A third aircraft hits the Pentagon in Washington and a fourth hijacked plane crashes in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people die in the attacks, the worst on US soil.
