Militants seize part of north Iraq town, villages

Gunmen seized part of Sulaiman Bek town and nearby villages in northern Iraq on Thursday, local officials said, the latest instance of authorities losing ground to militants. Sulaiman Bek has been previously targeted by Sunni militants, who last year executed 14 Shiite truck drivers on a nearby highway and also temporarily held territory. The latest flareup began with attacks by militants armed with light and medium weapons on army positions before they overran the town centre early Thursday, local official Talib al-Bayati said.

The unidentified gunmen captured the teacher on Wednesday evening as he returned from work, the official said. A Western diplomat confirmed the kidnapping. The teacher, whose identity has not been revealed, works for the American education and training organisation AMIDEAST, the official said. The gunmen took him to an unknown destination.

Egypt military 'kills 16 Sinai militants in air strikes'

Egypt's military said it killed 16 militants Saturday in air strikes in the restive Sinai peninsula, which jihadists have used as a springboard for attacks across the country. The air force has pressed ahead with air strikes in the region even after militants in north Sinai downed a helicopter last month with a shoulder fired missile, killing the entire crew of five. The militants have killed scores of soldiers and policemen in a growing insurgency after the army overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July.

Al Qaeda breaks link with Syrian militant group ISIL

By Oliver Holmes BEIRUT (Reuters) - Al Qaeda's general command said on Monday it had no links with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), in an apparent attempt to reassert its authority over fragmented Islamist fighters in Syria's civil war. After a month of rebel infighting, al Qaeda disavowed the increasingly independent ISIL in a move likely to bolster a rival Islamist group, the Nusra Front, as al Qaeda's official proxy in Syria.
