SEOUL, May 19 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Sunday fired a short-range missile into the East Sea, a Seoul military official said, a day after firing three short-range guided missiles into the same body of water. North Korea fired the missile Sunday afternoon, the official said on the condition of anonymity. Korean conductor-Portuguese award

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean conductor has recently tied for second place at an international conducting competition held in Portugal. Yoon Hyun-jin won the "Finalist Award" along with another finalist at the 2013 International Competition for Young Conductors held on May 15-18 in Lisbon, he told Yonhap News Agency on Monday. The 31-year-old was the only Korean out of the 145 conductors who took part in the competition from 35 countries. The first prize went to Azis Sadikovic from Austria.

Of 99 local shippers, 55 saw their operating profits fall an average of 146 percent in 2012 from a year ago, according to data by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). "The fall was blamed on decreased sales from the global economic slump with operating costs increasing on a rise in oil prices and financial costs," the KCCI said.

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- More South Korean companies chose to use the U.S. dollar in settling two-way trade with Japanese companies in the first quarter from three months earlier as a weaker yen raised foreign exchange losses for local firms, data showed Monday. In the first quarter, the dollar was the top settlement currency at 54.9 percent when local exporters shipped products to Japan, up from 46.4 percent three months earlier, according to the data by the customs agency and the Korea International Trade Association.

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- The financial regulator said Monday it will expand the debt relief fund designed to help heavy borrowers clear debts to include more possible applicants, taking the program's high demand into account. According to the Financial Services Commission (FSC), the country's top financial regulator, more than 110,000 applicants have so far signed up for the state-run debt relief program, known as the National Happiness Fund.

S. Korea's Park sacks spokesman amid sexual assault allegations

South Korean President Park Geun Hye has fired her spokesman Yoon Chang Jung for involvement in an unspecified "unsavory" act, her office said Thursday. The firing comes amid allegations Yoon sexually harassed a South Korean woman while accompanying the president on a trip to the United States, Yonhap News Agency reported from Los Angeles and Washington.

Hashimoto clarifies remarks on "comfort women" after flak

Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto on Wednesday sought to clarify his remarks on a system to recruit women into sexual servitude for Japan's soldiers during World War II, saying he personally does not condone the scheme. Two days after he made controversial remarks that the so-called comfort women were "necessary to maintain discipline" in the Japanese military, Hashimoto told reporters he simply stated a fact that people at the time had that kind of view.

U.S. carrier to arrive in S. Korea for military drills: reports

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz will make a port call in South Korea on Saturday to participate in a South Korea-U.S. joint naval exercise, Yonhap News Agency said Tuesday, citing a South Korean government source. The maritime readiness drills, to be held over the weekend off the southern and eastern coasts of South Korea, follow a five-day U.S.-South Korean antisubmarine drill in the Yellow Sea.

North Korea is believed to have taken its field artillery units off the highest level of combat readiness last week, Yonhap News Agency reported Tuesday, citing a senior South Korean government source. "It seems that North Korea lifted the No. 1 combat-ready posture around April 30," the source was quoted as saying, adding that it also appears to have withdrawn two intermediate-range Musudan missiles from missile mobile launchers on its east coast.

S. Korea probe says North behind cyber attack

A South Korean probe into a major cyber attack on its banks and broadcasters last month has determined North Korea's military intelligence agency was responsible, a report said Wednesday. The official investigation into access records and the malicious codes used in the attack pointed to the North's military Reconnaissance General Bureau as the source, Yonhap quoted a senior government official as saying. The Ministry of Information declined to comment but has scheduled a press briefing for 2:00pm (0500 GMT).
