Football: Aguero, Toure soothe Man City's title pain

Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure scored a pair of fine goals as Manchester City began life as former Premier League champions by winning 2-1 at home to West Ham United on Saturday. City relinquished their league crown to Manchester United earlier in the week but their success over mid-table West Ham tightens their grip on second place and takes them closer to Champions League qualification. Aguero opened the scoring with a well-worked effort after 28 minutes on a bright, sunny day at the Etihad Stadium.

Financier Fry appointed English Premier League chairman

LONDON (Reuters) - Anthony Fry, a British financier and self-confessed Manchester United supporter, has been appointed as the new chairman of the English Premier League for the next three years, the League said on Friday. Fry will replace the long-serving Dave Richards who is stepping down after 14 years in the part-time role. Fry, 57, is well known in the City of London after a career in corporate finance with banks including Rothschild, BZW, Credit Suisse and Lehman Brothers. He is current chairman of food company Dairy Crest.

Football: Mancini vows City will strengthen squad

Manchester City Roberto Mancini said Friday he is confident the club will act quickly in the transfer market in the close season to make up for a disappointing season.Manchester United's title win was confirmed with their 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Monday and they lead City by 16 points going into the weekend. Mancini's side have an FA Cup final against Wigan to look forward to but in the league they have made an underwhelming defence of last season's title.
