Pabriks visits Denmark

Defense Minister Artis Pabriks (Unity) and National Armed Forces' Joint Headquarters head, Brigadier General Juris Zeibarts are visiting Denmark today to meet with Latvian soldiers participating in the "Yellow Knight" exercise, the Defense Ministry informed LETA.In conclusion of the exercise, Zeibarts will sign a memorandum of understanding on the inclusion of the National Armed Forces' Infantry Battalion in the Danish Division.Today, Pabriks will visit Aarhus University to read a lecture on security developments in the Baltic Sea region.

Thirty police officers promoted in Karas

A total of 30 members of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) from the Karas Region were promoted to high ranks last week Thursday.The promotion list includes eight officers given the ranks of Inspector, eight senior Warrant Officers, two junior Warrant Officers and five Sergeants.In the Special Field Force, there are three senior Warrant Officers and four Sergeants.Kara’s regional police Commander, Commissioner Armas Shivute confirmed the promotions to Nampa upon enquiry Thursday, saying the promoted officers came from 14 police stations across the southern region.<

DND says military to comply with SC order on Burgos case

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin Friday said the Armed Forces will comply with the Supreme Court order the military must disclose the location of the soldiers involved in the abduction of activist Jonas Burgos. "AFP chief-of-staff Gen. Emmanuel T. Bautista has already given his word that they will cooperate. The DND will also cooperate and make sure that the people or personnel needed in the investigation will come out," he added. The DND chief also clarified the military and the defense establishment are not hiding these individuals.

Poland guarantees funds for missile shield

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski on Friday signed an amendment that guarantees funds for Poland's missile shield programme from next year until 2023. The program will be integrated into the wider NATO project and will "send an important signal to all that Poland has its own means of defence," he said, quoted on the presidency's website. Komorowski inked the amendment to a law on financing the armed forces at a military base in the northeastern village of Szypliszki, site of a powerful NATO radar.

US and Filipino marines staged armoured assault manoeuvres on Friday as part of annual military exercises the Philippines has deemed vital in building its capacity to defend itself. This year's edition is taking part amid a tense territorial dispute between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea, as well as bellicose anti-US rhetoric by North Korea. More than 8,000 soldiers from both countries, 30 military aircraft including a dozen US F/A-18 Hornets and three naval vessels are taking part in 12 days of military exercises that end on Wednesday.

US-Russia reset on 'pause': US general

A "reset" in US-Russia relations is now on pause and Moscow likely will be "the primary actor of regional concern," the American general nominated to take over as NATO commander said Thursday. General Philip Breedlove, President Barack Obama's pick to serve as NATO's next supreme allied commander, described Russia as an "aspirational superpower" and told lawmakers an attempt to forge more cooperative ties with Moscow had faltered for the moment. "I've described the reset as sort of, on pause," Breedlove told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
