Anastasiou agrees to take over at Panathinaikos

By Graham Wood ATHENS (Reuters) - Panathinaikos will appoint former assistant boss Giannis Anastasiou as their coach for next season as the Greek Super League club try to recover from a shock sixth-place finish this term. The 40-year-old former Greece international will replace Giannis Vonortas, who will return to his duties coaching the academy youth side after taking over in a caretaker role for the final few weeks of the season.

Football: Panathinaikos fires third coach of season

Greek Super League club Panathinaikos announced Sunday that they have fired Spanish coach Fabri Gonzalez as the financially-troubled Athens club is suffering one of their worst seasons in the domestic league. The team announced that assistant coach Giannis Vonortas will manage the team for the last four matches of the season and possible playoff action, becoming the fourth coach in the campaign equalling a team record set in the 2004-2005 season.

Basketball: Fan violence halts Greek Cup final

Fighting between fans marred the Greek Cup basketball final Sunday, won by Panathinaikos over Olympiakos, with riot police called in after two players were hurt, one with a knife thrown from the stands. Authorities stopped the game and emptied the Ellinikon indoor stadium seven minutes before the end of the second period with Panathinaikos ahead 26-17 when fans from both teams clashed in the stands and on the court. Riot-trained police were deployed to separate the two groups and led them out of the stadium.

Football: Karagounis returns to Greece squad

Fulham midfielder Giorgos Karagounis was among the 20 players called up by Greece coach Fernando Santos Friday for the February 6 friendly against Switzerland at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus. The 35-year-old midfielder makes his comeback after being left out of the squad for last November's friendly against the Republic of Ireland. Karagounis, who moved to Fulham from Panathinaikos last year, has been capped 122 times, more than any other Greek player. Santos also handed a first call-up to 28-year-old defender Sokratis Fytanidis of Athens club Atromitos.

Second-half goals from Portuguese midfielder Zeca and Jean-Alain Boumsong gave the struggling Athens giants a two-goal lead before Anastasios Karamanos netted a last-minute consolation at the Peristeri Municipal Stadium.

Soccer-Leto leaves Panathinaikos

The 26-year-old Argentine, who shone after joining from arch rivals Olympiakos Piraeus in 2009, has not kicked a ball since January 2012 due to a knee problem.

Soccer-Panathinaikos appoint Fabri as new coach

By Graham Wood ATHENS, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Panathinaikos have appointed Spaniard Fabriciano Gonzalez Penelas as their new coach, the Athens soccer club announced on Tuesday. The 57-year-old, known as 'Fabri', replaces Juan Roman Rocha, who stepped down from the post of head coach to return to his previous role as under-20 coach following a string of poor results. Fabri is the cash-strapped club's third coach this season, after Rocha had replaced the sacked Portuguese Jesualdo Ferreira.
