War crimes prosecutor wants Congo ex-militia boss retried

International Criminal Court prosecutors are appealing a decision to free Congolese ex-militia boss Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui for war crimes last year, asking the court to order a new trial. The United Nations said 126 women were raped in Minova in November after Congolese troops fled to the town as so-called M23 rebels briefly captured the nearby provincial capital of Goma.

British intelligence 'had role in plot to kill Lumumba'

A former British intelligence officer claimed that Britain played a role in the assassination of Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba, one of her friends has told the British media. Before she died three years ago, Daphne Park -- who was sent as an MI6 officer to the Belgian Congo in 1959 -- told a fellow member of Britain's House of Lords that she had helped coordinate Britain's role in Lumumba's elimination two years later.

Around 11 deaths in DR Congo fighting

Around 11 people were killed after fresh fighting between government forces and a militia in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations said Monday. UN spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the APCLS militia suffered the reported fatalities, while a soldier from the DR Congo army was injured during the skirmishes in Kitchanga, in North Kivu province.
