Ex-HBOS chief Crosby asks to be stripped of knighthood

British police investigating the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal charged a former BBC driver on Wednesday with sexually assaulting a teenage boy. David Smith, 66, is the first person to be charged under Operation Yewtree, the high-profile Scotland Yard probe set up in the wake of revelations that late BBC star Savile was a prolific sex offender. The scandal rocked the BBC and has led to the arrests of several celebrities including singer Gary Glitter, comedians Freddie Starr and Jim Davidson and radio presenter Stuart Hall.

New chief starts job of repairing BBC's reputation

New BBC director-general Tony Hall took up his post on Tuesday, starting the task of restoring the reputation of the world's biggest broadcaster that has been rocked by a child sex abuse scandal. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) also warned in Tuesday's report that there remained a "distinct possibility" that police could make the same mistakes in the future. HMIC found only five allegations and two pieces of evidence in police files on Savile, who is now accused of over 450 sex crimes.

Revenues advanced 3.5 percent to £10.37 billion, while pre-tax profits rose 8.3 percent to almost £1.1 billion.

LONDON, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Dozens of victims of alleged sexual abuse by the late British television star Jimmy Savile have sued the BBC in the wake of a scandal which threw the British broadcaster into turmoil and has raised questions about media ethics. A police-led report showed last month that Savile - an eccentric presenter once much loved by the British public - sexually assaulted hundreds of people, mainly children, at BBC premises and hospitals over six decades of unparalleled abuse.
