Israeli settler housing in West Bank 'counterproductive'

The United States warned Israel on Thursday that its reported plans to build additional settlement housing in the West Bank were "counterproductive." Israel police hold Jerusalem Muslim cleric for six hours

By Jeffrey Heller JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli police arrested the top Palestinian Muslim religious leader in Jerusalem on Wednesday and questioned him for six hours about a fracas between Palestinians and Israelis at al-Aqsa mosque before releasing him without charge. Palestinian leaders and neighboring Jordan condemned the arrest of Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem after Palestinian worshippers scuffled with Israelis near Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque on Tuesday.

Palestinian olive trees targeted in hate crime

Vandals believed to be Jewish extremists have uprooted dozens of olive trees and scrawled graffiti near a Palestinian village in the southern West Bank, police and witnesses said on Friday. Palestinian witnesses told AFP that approximately 80 olive trees were uprooted in the village of Al-Tiwana east of Yatta. Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri confirmed that "police received a report about the damaging of some 62 Palestinian-owned olive trees" in the area. She also noted that "slogans such as 'price tag' and 'mutual guarantee' were scrawled nearby."

Israel approves 296 West Bank settler homes

Israel has given the go-ahead to build nearly 300 homes in the settlement of Beit El near Ramallah, a spokesman said, in a move likely to spark tensions as Washington seeks to rekindle peace talks. "The Civil Administration has given the green light for 296 housing units at Beit El, but this is only the first stage of a process before actual construction can begin," he said, speaking on behalf of a unit within the defence ministry which administers the West Bank.

EU's Ashton edgy on new Israeli settlement moves

EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton said Friday she is worried about mounting tensions in East Jerusalem and the West Bank after conflicting messages from Israel on settlement activity. "The High Representative is concerned by developments over the past week in East Jerusalem and the West Bank which have increased tensions on the ground and risk undermining current efforts to re-launch peace talks," her office in Brussels said in a statement.

Jordan summons Israel envoy over Jerusalem mufti

Jordan on Wednesday summoned Israeli Ambassador Daniel Nevo after MPs unanimously demanded the government expel him following Israel's detention of the mufti of Jerusalem, state media reported. Interior Minister Hussein Majali, who is acting foreign minister, summoned Nevo, the official news agency Petra reported. "These Israeli actions violate international law and obstruct peace efforts. As occupying force, Israel is responsible for preventing such provocations. Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa are a red line," Majali said.

Jordan fury as Israel quizzes Mufti on Jerusalem Day

Israeli police briefly detained a top Muslim cleric on Wednesday as the Jewish state marked Jerusalem Day, sparking a furious response from Jordan which summoned Israel's ambassador in Amman. In Jerusalem's Old City, police arrested more than a dozen people for what they said was disruption of public order, as Jews passed through Arab-dominated areas to holy sites in annexed east Jerusalem.

Stephen Hawking to boycott Israel conference

Renowned British physicist Stephen Hawking has pulled out of a June conference hosted by Israel's President Shimon Peres, joining an academic boycott of the Jewish state, event organisers said on Wednesday. "Hawking joined the academic boycott of Israel and pulled out of the Israeli Presidential Conference: Facing Tomorrow 2013, under the auspices of President Peres," they said in a statement.
