Football: New Asian boss claims government smear campaign

Asia's new football chief said he was the victim of a smear campaign involving a government after his election was overshadowed by claims of vote-buying and human rights abuses. Bahrain's Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who was voted president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) by a big margin on Thursday, refused to name the country in question but said he knew who was to blame.

Bahrain's Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa was voted the new president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Thursday, replacing disgraced ex-leader Mohamed bin Hammam. Sheikh Salman beat UAE rival Yousef Al Serkal and Thailand's Worawi Makudi in the first round of voting when he gathered 33 of the 46 ballots to amass the necessary two-thirds majority. The build-up to the vote was dominated by claim and counter-claim of outside interference, with the powerful Olympic Council of Asia accused of lobbying on behalf of Sheikh Salman.

Football: Sri Lanka's Fernando to challenge FIFA ban

FIFA executive committee member Manilal Fernando said Wednesday he will mount a legal challenge against a ban preventing him from working in football for eight years following an ethics probe. The former Sri Lankan football chief said he had not been told the reasons for the decision taken Tuesday to ban him from any type of football-related activity locally or internationally. In a statement issued in Colombo, his lawyers said Fernando was taking the issue to the independent Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

One of the top candidates to become Asian football's next leader called Monday for an investigation into allegations of vote-buying and interference which have surfaced before this week's vote. Yousef Al Serkal told AFP that the "serious" allegations needed to be probed and he warned that he could launch an appeal if his bid for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) presidency fails.

Party time as Maracana reopens for World Cup test

Rio's fabled Maracana Stadium reopened on Saturday after a multimillion-dollar makeover that will make the legendary arena the showpiece venue of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics. A limited crowd of approximately 25,000 spectators thronged the fabled venue, which hosted a world record audience of more than 200,000 for the 1950 World Cup but has now had its capacity reduced to a maximum of 82,238. The 84-year-old Paraguayan, who had heart surgery for the fourth time in December, has led CONMEBOL for six consecutive terms of office since 1986 and been on the executive committee of world soccer's ruling body FIFA since 1998.

More trouble for FIFA as key member quits reform process

By Simon Evans MIAMI (Reuters) - A leading member of the body set up to advise FIFA on its anti-corruption reforms has resigned saying she does not believe world football's governing body is taking the process of change seriously enough. Alexandra Wrage, who served on FIFA's independent governance committee (IGC), which was set up to advise on reform after allegations of corruption in the organisation, said she saw no point in continuing her work. FIFA were not immediately available for comment.
