Football: Mariners' Dutch defender Zwaanswijk to retire

Dutch defender Patrick Zwaanswijk, rated one of the best foreign imports to play in Australia's A-League, said Friday he will retire after the Central Coast Mariners' AFC Champions League tie against China's Guangzhou Evergrande. The 38-year-old former FC Utrecht and NAC Breda defender will wind up his playing career in the two-match tie against Marcello Lippi's Ghuangzhou in Gosford next Wednesday and the reverse fixture in China on May 22. The Mariners said Zwaanswijk will remain with the club and take charge of the youth team for the next three years.

AZ Alkmaar won the Dutch Cup on Thursday with a 2-1 win over PSV Eindhoven in Rotterdam. It was Alkmaar's fourth cup success after wins in 1978, 1981 and 1982. Football: Ajax crowned Dutch champions for 32nd time

Ajax won their 32nd Dutch league title in style on Sunday overwhelming Willem II Tilburg 5-0 in the penultimate match of the season. Victory put Ajax onto 73 points four ahead of closest challenger PSV Eindhoven with just one game to play. For Ajax coach Frank de Boer it was his third successive title to add to the five he won as an Ajax player in the 1990's. Ajax lost just two games all season, both of them to Vitesse Arnhem. "I am extremely proud of this run of titles," said a visibly emotional de Boer.

A flat Manchester City played out a goalless draw with League Cup winners Swansea City in a typical end-of-season affair at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday. With little at stake for either side in south Wales, this encounter lacked any real intensity, although FA Cup finalists City had more chances to come away with the three points. Substitute Edin Dzeko had the clearest opening of all, firing wide from six yards with the goal gaping after being set up by Pablo Zabaleta, and City's failure to win means they could still be caught by second-placed Chelsea.

Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 3-0 in their Champions League semi-final second-leg in Barcelona on Wednesday to set up the first ever all-German final and the Bundesliga champions' third final in four years. Goals by Arjen Robben, an own-goal by Gerard Pique and a header by Thomas Mueller, all in the second-half, saw them to an astonishing 7-0 aggregate victory and a date with Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on May 25.
