Football: Van der Wiel out with knee injury

Paris Saint Germain defender Gregory Van der Wiel has been ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League clash against Bayer Levekusen with a knee injury, the French champions said on Tuesday. "Van Der Wiel will be absent this week to undergo treatment in Munich ... for chronic pain in his right knee," PSG said in a statement. The Dutch player is also expected to be absent for Sunday's Ligue 1 clash with Saint-Etienne.

Football: Time running out for new Stuttgart boss Stevens

New coach Huub Stevens took charge of struggling VfB Stuttgart on Monday and insisted time is running out to prevent only their second relegation from the Bundesliga since 1975. Stuttgart are 15th in the table and only out of the relegation places on goal difference with Stevens to take charge for his first game against mid-table Werder Bremen on Saturday. The 60-year-old took over after predecessor Thomas Schneider was sacked on Sunday as their 2-2 draw against bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig came after eight straight defeats.

Football: Injured Strootman to miss World Cup

AS Roma's Dutch international midfielder Kevin Strootman will miss the World Cup after being ruled out for the rest of the season with ruptured knee ligaments, the Serie A Club said on Monday. The 24-year-old will undergo surgery on his left knee and the recovery period could take between four and six months. "It's a small catastrophe," Dutch coach Louis van Gaal was quoted as saying on the Netherlands Football Federation website, "because Kevin was in his best form for both the national team and Roma."

Football: Strootman to miss World Cup with ruptured ligament

AS Roma's Dutch international midfielder Kevin Strootman will miss the World Cup after being ruled out for the rest of the season with ruptured knee ligaments, the Serie A Club said on Monday. The 24-year-old will undergo surgery and could take between four and six months to recover. Strootman initially suffered a knock in the Netherlands' international friendly with France last week. He was in Roma's starting line-up against Napoli on Sunday but collapsed in the 12th minute and was carried off on a stretcher.

Football: Van den Brom sacked as Anderlecht coach

Belgian champion's Sporting Anderlecht have sacked their Dutch coach John van den Brom, club president Roger Vanden Stock confirmed on Monday. The 47-year-old has been temporarily replaced by his deputy Besnik Hasi until the end of the season. Van den Brom joined the club in May 2012, leading them to the title in his first season in charge. His contract had been due to expire in June 2015. Football: Stuttgart sack Schneider, Stevens steps in

Stuttgart have signed Dutch coach Huub Stevens to save them from relegation after predecessor Thomas Schneider was sacked on Sunday following a record run of defeats. Stevens, 60, becomes Stuttgart's third coach this season as Schneider, who had only been in charge for six months, was sacked in the wake of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Bundesliga bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig. Stuttgart are winless in their last nine games and suffered a club record of eight consecutive defeats under the 41-year-old Schneider, who replaced Bruno Labbadia in August.
