NFL-Vegas bookmakers backing 49ers in Super Bowl

By Frank Pingue Feb 1 (Reuters) - The San Francisco 49ers can count Las Vegas among their newest supporters for this weekend's Super Bowl, but casinos in the gambling city would prefer they win by a small margin in a low-scoring affair. The over-under, or the combined score of the two teams in the National Football League's title game on Sunday, is 47 1/2 points and the 49ers are 3 1/2-point favorites to beat the Baltimore Ravens.

NFL-Profiles of key San Francisco 49ers players

Feb 1 (Reuters) - Brief profiles of key San Francisco 49ers players for Sunday's Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans: - - Colin Kaepernick (quarterback) - The second-year backup got his chance midway through the campaign when starter Alex Smith suffered a concussion. He played so well the coaches gave him the top job. A strong runner, he set an NFL record for most rushing yards (181) by a quarterback in his first playoff game. - -

NFL-Talented 49ers roster finally comes of age

By Simon Evans NEW ORLEANS, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Barely three years since being derided as a sorry parody of the franchise which once dominated the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers have a chance to claim a record-equalling sixth Super Bowl win on Sunday. It has been 18 years since the 49ers last appeared in a Super Bowl - their fifth victory coming against San Diego Chargers in Miami in 1994 - and in that time the franchise endured some poor seasons.

NFL-49ers' return to Super Bowl still a family affair

Jan 31 (Reuters) - It may be hard to view a National Football League team valued at over $1 billion as a mom-and-pop operation, but the Super Bowl-bound San Francisco 49ers have remained very much a family business. Jed York is the 49ers' chief executive and principal owner, having been passed the torch from father John York and his wife Denise DeBartolo York in 2008 after Eddie DeBartolo Jr. was forced to hand over control of the franchise to his sister in 2000 when he became involved in a messy corruption case.

NFL-49ers' Culliver under fire at Super Bowl for anti-gay remarks

By Simon Evans NEW ORLEANS, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Super Bowl-bound San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver faced intense media scrutiny on Thursday for saying he would not accept a gay teammate in the team's locker-room. Culliver came under fire for the comments he made this week on comedian Artie Lange's radio show but apologies from the player and National Football League team in statements late on Wednesday did little to diffuse the situation.

NFL-Gore shines, then praises coach for 49ers' transformation

By Simon Evans ATLANTA, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Frank Gore scored the winning touchdown in the San Francisco 49ers 28-24 NFC Championship win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday and immediately praised coach Jim Harbaugh for turning around the franchise. Gore was drafted by the 49ers in 2005 during a period when one of the National Football League's most successful franchises was enduring some of its leanest years, having gone 2-14 in the previous campaign.
