Moreno strikes lucky in Belgian Classic

By Alasdair Fotheringham HUY, Belgium (Reuters) - Spaniard Daniel Moreno clinched Russian team Katusha's second win in two years in the Fleche Wallonne one-day classic on Wednesday after staying in the same hotel room as several previous winners. Moreno had been allocated the lucky number 11 room in Katusha sports director Valerio Piva's hotel near Liege.

Cycling: Moreno triumphs in Fleche Wallonne

Spaniard Daniel Moreno won the second of the Ardennes Classics, the Fleche-Wallonne, on Wednesday giving his team Katusha their second successive victory in the race. The 31-year-old - whose team leader Joaquim Rodriguez won last year - beat two Colombians Sergio Henao and Carlos Alberto Betancur to the line in the 205km race. Rodriguez failed to mount a challenge as the effects of his fall in last weekend's Amstel Gold Race took their toll.

Cycling: Rodriguez passed fit for Fleche Wallonne

Last year's Fleche Wallonne winner Joaquim Rodriguez will be at the start line on Wednesday for the 2013 edition of the race despite falling in Sunday's Amstel Gold Race. Rodriguez suffered bruising to his left thigh after the fall, but his participation in the race was confirmed by his team Katusha following a two-hour training session on Tuesday. "I will be wearing the number one which is a source of motivation," said the 33-year-old Catalan climber, known as 'Purito'.

Cycling: Contador reluctantly tackling the Ardennes

Alberto Contador will be one of the main draws at the Fleche Wallonne classic on Wednesday but the former Tour de France winner claims he wanted to skip the event. The 30-year-old Spaniard's participation comes as something of a surprise after he recently said he was tired. His main aim for the year is a third Tour title in July. The champion from 2007 and 2009, who was stripped of a third victory in 2010 for doping, admitted the Fleche Wallonne had not featured in part of his original planning. But he said his Saxo-Tinkoff team has told him to ride.

Contador to take part in Ardennes classics

PARIS (Reuters) - Alberto Contador will ride in the Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege one-day races this week after considering skipping them because of fatigue, the double Tour de France champion said on Monday. "(My team) Saxo Tinkoff wanted me to be there and these are races everybody likes to take part in, even if to prepare for the Tour de France it would have been better to skip them," the Spaniard said in a statement.

Cycling: Contador and Froome head to head at Dauphine

Tour de France hopefuls Alberto Contador and Chris Froome will be the two star names at the Grand Boucle's main warm-up event the Criterium de Dauphine in June, organisers said on Monday. The week-long event is often seen as a good marker for Tour form and Briton Bradley Wiggins won last year before going on to triumph in cycling's biggest race. The June 2-9 course will tackle the epic Alpe d'Huez on its penultimate stage. That stage will be seen as a particularly important gauge of form as the famous climb will feature twice during the Tour in July.
