Boxing: Cuba's Rigondeaux snaps Donaires' streak

Guillermo Rigondeaux remained undefeated by beating Nonito Donaire by a unanimous decision in their world title junior featherweight fight Saturday, handing the Filipino his first loss in 12 years. Two-time Olympic gold medal winner Rigondeaux recovered nicely from an earlier knockdown to win the 12-round bout on all three judges' scorecards, 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111. Rigondeaux retained his WBA junior featherweight crown and improved to 12-0 with eight knockouts. He also took Donaire's WBO version of the belt.

Thousands protest in Ukraine opposition rally

More than 5,000 protesters rallied in Kharkiv Friday against the authorities, calling for former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko to be released from jail in the first major show of opposition in the east Ukraine city. The protest went ahead despite a local court order banning the demonstration and dozens of public transport vehicles blocking the rally's passage, an AFP journalist on the scene said.

Boxing: Donaire looks to extend win streak

Filipino boxer Nonito Donaire will put his 12-year, 30-fight win streak on the line when he faces undefeated Guillermo Rigondeaux in a WBA world junior featherweight title bout Saturday. The 30-year-old Donaire will be trying to add the WBA title to his WBO crown when the two face off at New York City's Radio City Music Hall venue. In his last bout in December, Donaire was dominant, successfully retaining his title against Jorge Arce, of Mexico, with a third round knockout.

Boxing: Ageless Hopkins to defend crown against Murat

Bernard Hopkins, the oldest boxer to win a major world title, said Wednesday that he will defend his International Boxing Federation light-heavyweight crown later this year against German Karo Murat. Hopkins broke his own world record by nearly two years last month by winning a unanimous decision over Tavoris Cloud at the age of 48 to take the title. "Yes my next fight is the mandatory Murat," Hopkins confirmed in a posting on his Twitter page, later posting that the fight would happen in July or August.

World featherweight champion Chris John learnt to box using tatty old gloves in an abandoned football field in rural Indonesia, pushed on by his father who was determined to make him a winner. "My father was very domineering. He would hit me with a book, slap me, and make me do push-ups if I came home late from playing with friends. I had to accept every punishment without resistance," John recalled. "I hated boxing at first, but it somehow grew on me."

Japan's Shinsuke Yamanaka defeated Malcolm Tunacao of the Philippines by technical knockout to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight title on Monday. Yamanaka, 30, floored the challenger twice in the third round with a straight left. And it was the same straight left shot that knocked a bloodied Tunacao to the canvas one minute and 57 seconds into the 12th, for the referee to top the fight.

Challenger Akira Yaegashi won a close-range battle to outpoint fellow Japanese Toshiyuki Igarashi in a World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title bout on Monday. Three judges scored it 115-110, 116-109 and 117-108 in favour of the challenger. "It's like a dream. A small boxer like me was able to fight in a big class. It was a nice challenge. I'm the strongest in the world," said Yaegashi, who had a 0-4 record against Igarashi when the two were amateur fighters.

Japan's Takashi Miura said his late father helped him win the new World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight champion Monday, after a technical knockout in the ninth round against Gamaliel Diaz. The 28-year-old challenger floored the Mexican title-holder with a straight left one minute and 21 seconds into the ninth to finish the contest, having already knocked his opponent to the canvas several times during the bout.

Boxing: Japan's Kameda defends WBA bantamweight title

Japan's Koki Kameda narrowly defeated Panomroonglek Kaiyanghadaogym of Thailand by a split decision to successfully defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight title on Sunday. Two judges scored 115-113 and 115-114 in favour of the Japanese, who later apologised for what he said was a poor performance in the ring, while one judge counted it 116-113 for the Thai challenger. "I'm sorry," Kameda repeated six times during a short post-match interview. "It was not good at all...I'm very sorry for so many fans here."
