Djokovic leads Serbia to victory over the United States in Davis Cup

U.S. Sports Desk, Apr 8 (EFE).- World No. 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Sam Querrey in singles, helping Serbia clinch a 3-1 win over the United States in the quarterfinals of the World Group. Djokovic's 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-0 win over Querrey gave Serbia the third point in the weekend's tie and helped it advance to the semifinals. Djokovic and Querrey battled for two hours and 35 minutes on the hard court at the Taco Bell Arena in Boise, Idaho.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who suffered an ankle injury during the Davis Cup World Group quarter-finals with the United States, said his participation at the Monte Carlo Masters was uncertain, media reported Monday. "The season on the clay begins... I would like to play in Monte Carlo, where I live. I love that tournament, I am optimist, but I do not know if it is realistic," Djokovic was quoted as saying by Serbia's Beta News Agency. Talking about his injury, Djokovic said he had "avoided the worst degree of distortion".

"It's very strong emotion when you play for your country. I guess that's the biggest reason why I kept playing," Djokovic told reporters after securing Serbia an unassailable 3-1 lead.

It is the second win for Serbia in four years over the 32-time titlist USA. In their only other previous Davis Cup encounter Serbia defeated the Americans in Belgrade in 2010.

Tennis: Djokovic shines under lights to reach quarter-finals

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic stayed up late to book a quarter-final berth at the Indian Wells Masters early Thursday, polishing off American Sam Querrey in straight sets around 2:00 am. The Serbian star beat American Querrey 6-0, 7-6 (8/6) in a match that didn't get on court until after midnight thanks to some lengthy matches in the Wednesday day session. Djokovic, whose two titles this year include a fourth Australian Open crown, stretched his match winning streak to 21 -- dating back to a loss to Querrey at the Paris Masters on October 31st of last year.

Courier wants attitude change on U.S. Davis Cup team

(Reuters) - U.S. Davis Cup captain Jim Courier would like to see an attitude change in his singles players when the Americans take on Serbia and world number one Novak Djokovic in a quarter-finals tie next month in Boise, Idaho. Courier said on Wednesday he expected to use the same team that beat Brazil 3-2 in their first-round tie, and wanted John Isner and Sam Querrey to show more "street-fighting" spirit in the April 5-7 matches at the Taco Bell Arena.
