Football: Simon in Mariners return from Korea

Striker Matt Simon will return to Australian A-League champions Central Coast Mariners next season after a release from his South Korean club, the Mariners said on Thursday. Simon, 27, has signed a one-year deal after he was released from K-League side Chunnam Dragons following an injury-blighted season. The player, who left the Mariners in January last year, said he was looking to recapture his form playing again under coach Graham Arnold.

Football: A-League has too many foreign imports - Arnold

Championship-winning coach Graham Arnold said Monday there are too many foreign players in Australia's A-League, warning their prevalence is hurting the national team. Arnold claimed his Central Coast Mariners, who clinched their first domestic championship title a week ago, are the only club in the A-League prioritising local talent over foreign imports. "I think all other clubs need to follow suit because it's damaging the national team," said Arnold ahead of the Mariners' home AFC Champions League match with Japan's Kashiwa Reysol on Tuesday.

Football: Conca the conqueror inspires Guangzhou rout

Argentine wizard Dario Conca inspired Guangzhou Evergrande to a 4-0 win over Muangthong United and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Kashiwa Reysol also enjoyed big victories as goals flowed in the AFC Champions League Wednesday. Guangzhou, the Chinese double-winners led by World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi, were matched until the break by the battling Thais before Conca started a second-half rout with a 51st-minute header, and finished it with a coolly taken penalty in injury time.

Football: Mariners stay alive in ACL with win over Guizhou

Australia's Central Coast Mariners kept alive their hopes of advancing out of the group stage in the AFC Champions League with a 2-1 home win over China's Guizhou Renhe in Gosford on Wednesday. Defender Trent Sainsbury's first goal for the Mariners proved the clincher in the Group H match after the Chinese side had equalised through an own goal. The Mariners, who had won only one of 14 previous ACL games, had looked set for further heartbreak after an unfortunate own goal by goalkeeper Mat Ryan cancelled out Pedj Bojic's spectacular 50th-minute opener.
